MessageProposal 'C' "15 protect 1 rd, 20 protect 2 rd, 3 rd ufa redraft"

1. Teams cut their rosters to 27 players (cut players go into re-draft rounds as UFAs).
2. 15 players protected from 1st round of waiver draft (using draft order sequence each team picks 1 player) These players are automatically protected and have no need to be added to the subsequent protection list.
3. Each team then protects five additional players.
4. 2 more waiver rounds are conducted using same draft order sequence. (UFAs are may not be drafted during these rounds)
5. Teams then retain their players that have cleared the waiver rounds. Teams that have more than 27 on their roster at this point in the draft must now trim their roster to 27 - these players are now eligible UFAs.
6. The regular 3 round re-draft is now conducted for remaining UFAs (teams must drop a player if they pick a player and are over the 27 player limit - just as in past years re-drafts).
7. In the case that there are teams that do not reach their 27 player limit they can choose from remaining UFAs to complete their roster.

Mock draft observations:

Pro's= most movement, high risk/high reward, all GMs must work hard, re-draft picks remain quite valuable.

Con's = more complex, higher risk, some teams may not find much value in rounds 2 and 3 of re-draft.

MessageProposal 'B' "20 protect + waiver"

1. Each team protects 20 players.
2. All other players from the franchise is placed on waivers (excluding prospect picks as indicated earlier).
3. 5 rounds re-draft (any previous trades for re-draft picks are included in same numerical order)
4. UFAs are open to being chosen during re-draft.
5. Teams can chose their own player (every player picked is subsequently protected).
6. At the end of the draft, teams keep undrafted players who have cleared waivers to fill the rest of their roster to a maximum of 27 players.
7. In the rare case in which a team may not have reached the 27 player limit they may choose from remaining UFAs to top off their roster (in same draft order in case their is more than one team who needs to access more players).

Mock draft observations:

Pros - not too much risk for each franchise, more simple than option 'c'.

Cons - little movement, less power shift, good players left out there, re-draft trades mean less, and perhaps if we continue this in future re-draft picks will lose their value.

MessageYes - this is a process we are planning on setting up for the long haul (ie an every year device). However, it may need some tweaking. I was away on holidays before I could disclose details on proposal 'b' or 'c'. Watch for these today.

Messagei agree, it would be nice to have a set process, i gather that is what we are deciding on and then it will be set?

MessageIs this a process that we plan to go thru every year from now on? Or, is this part of a 2 year plan, which started last year, with Phil leaving, and trying to bring more parity into the FHL?

MessageIs proposal 3 only a 3 round draft? Or is there a further progression of protection as the rounds go on?

MessageProposal A - "straight 20"

1. 20 players protected (published on banter board 1 week prior to draft).

2. All unprotected players become UFAs and enter the FHL re-draft.

3. A 7 round draft takes place (using the regular order, trades impacting the draft remain the same draft round etc.)

Pros - most simple to run, less risk for most teams.

Cons - teams that don't have enough picks to fill out their roster b/c of trading picks (Terror and Express would need one more pick each), not a lot of change really to the current dynamics.

MessageOkay - we've got three proposals so far.

I'll present the rules in subsequent posts, along with how the mock draft turned out with its pro's and con's. All proposals leave franchise prospects out of the rule changes. For now here's the title for each proposal.

In no particular order:

Proposal A "straight 20" - teams protect 20 players all others become UFAs. FHL re-draft 7 rds.

Proposal B "20 protect + waiver" - teams protect 20, 5 rd re-draft. Teams have choice to keep players that cleared the waiver (upto total max of 27)

Proposal C "15 protect 1 rd, 20 protect 2 rd, 3 rd ufa redraft"

MessageWhat's the story on the mock drafts? I'm in favor of a lower protection number like 18 but lets hear some ideas.
