'Pool unable to share spoils in Cup second-leg'

Welshpool came close to regaining some pride in their second clash with Abergele in a week, but were ultimately let down by a poor first-half showing.

Much like in the previous fixture, Welshpool started strongly, but were unable to break down their dogged opposition, and found themselves falling behind, the visitors scoring eighteen first-half points, with Welshpool only managing a solitary Daley Jones penalty in a poor first-half performance.

After a stirring half-time team-talk, 'Pool managed to break through the Abergele defence, with second-row Ben Corfield touching down after some strong mauling from the Welshpool pack.
Unfortunately for the hosts, they allowed their opponents to quickly re-establish a strong lead with another converted try, giving Abergele a 21-8 lead.
Welshpool, however, were determined not to let the match slip from them so easily, and were able to force their way over the line, a strong run from prop Jamie Evans allowing veteran second-row Nick Larder to cross under the points, with replacement Simon Jones adding the conversion.

Sensing that the game was theirs for the taking, 'Pool endeavoured to find their way back over the Abergele line, but had to settle for second place, with the visitors showing their character under pressure to claim the win.

Following their impressive 59-3 aggregate win over Wrexham, Newtown have drawn North Wales Div 4 side Abergele in the semi-final.

Abergele have been going very well this season and comprehensively beat Welshpool over two legs in their first round tie, so we will need to be at our best if we want to be involved in the final of the competition.

Once again, this will be a two leg, home and away tie, both fixtures to be played in the new year, dates tbc.

In the other semi-final, Machynlleth, who received a bye in the last round, take on Harlech or Bangor.

MessageA depleted Welshpool side suffered a heavy defeat at Abergele this past Saturday as they began the defence of their North Wales Intermediate Cup at Abergele.
With several regulars unavailable, the side had an unusual look to it, and a lack of sufficient substitutes left them unable to stop their opponents crossing the line after several injuries.
Welshpool started brightly, pinning Abergele back in their own half in the early going. After an Alan Williams penalty kick narrowly missed the target, Abergele were able to open the scoring, taking a 10-0 lead. Welshpool replied through a Frank Johns penalty, but were unable to stop their opponents from scoring again, findig themselves 22-3 down at half time.
As the game degenerated into a series of scuffles with occasional moments of rugby, Welshpool found themselves down to 14 men, when winger Tim Sharratt found himself in the sin bin for an alleged trip on his opposing number.
With centre Owen Evans and flanker Ryan Griffiths both leaving the field through injury, Welshpool's were without any more substitutes, meaning that when full-back Kyle Bowles had to leave the pitch, they found themselves reduced to 14 men for the rest of the game, whilst hooker Barry Williams continued despite a nasty gash to the head.
Despite occasional moments of good play, Welshpool were unable to claw themselves back into the game, and found themselves stood behind their posts on several more occasions, with Abergele running out 46-3 winners. smilie
