My name is Michael G. Bracey. I am a researcher at the National Archives, College Park, Md. I am trying to help a veteran (former 14th ACR/11th ACR Trooper) who has a claim with the VA. The veterans name is William Ellison, and he was in Howitzer Battery, 1st Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, and then the 11th ACR.

Sometime between 1971 and 1972, Mr. Ellison became ill along with 38 other 14th (or 11th) ACR members from something that was eaten in the mess hall. All 39 soldiers were hospitalized. Mr. Ellison was diagnosed with Hepatitis.
I am looking for some history that could be used as evidence that Mr. Ellison can use in his VA claim. Perhaps people who were there when it happened and who might remember, or something in the units history that could help.

I am a Vietnam Veteran myself (1967-68) and former 6th ACR Trooper. Anything you could do to help would be appreciated.

MessageLooking to hear from any of the guys I served with. Looking at the pictures of the OP sure brings back memories. I'm happy to see they turned it into a museum. If I ever win the lottery I'll go visit the place.

Best wishes to all who served.

MessageNed, I know that a lot of "conspricy theorist" types have tried to link that area to everything from nukes to nerve gas, but that's not true. That area under the parade ground was used for archives--- old records, unaccountable assets, and generally junk that had no real storage anywhere else on post. The nukes, known as "Davy Crockett" during my time were stored in the 58th Engineers' warehouse, at the other end of the parade field.

My one visit to that area was somewhat disappointing, as I found it to be a basic Fibber McGee's closet of old things not used any longer. It would be fun to imagine that it was more than what it was, but basicly, it was a dumping ground for things that no one knew how to dispose of.

Think of it as a garage that gets filled with enough junk that you don't get to park your car there.

Message@Don Dixon - I just returned from the reunion at JBLM. It was a great reunion, and the 1-14 guys really went all out to make us feel welcome. Next year's reunion site will be determined soon. I urge you to attend, and feel that sense of family that we felt this past weekend. Although this was the first reunion I've been able to attend, it won't be my last.
