I love this site. It's so incredibly interesting for me. I was born at the GAFB in November, 1954. My birth certificate was signed by Dr. Jose Valderaz. My late dad was enlisted but not stationed at GAFB and my mom lived in the community. My family are native to the Delta area and is of African American descent.

Hi.... I am looking for a John e (Johnny ?) Fisher...... He is my grandfather that I never met..,from what I am told he was stationed at GAFB around 1943.... He is listed on my fathers birth certificate as being from lake lee, Pa. Although I haven't been able to find a Lake Lee Pa. I have found a Lake Lee in Greenville Ms. So it is possible he may have been from the Greenville area.... If any of you can help me with this , it would greatly be appreciated.... I arrived @ Greenville AFB around the 4th of July, 1964. I was only there about five weeks but I will never forget that time. It was hot, dry, and plenty of mosquitos. However, it was a great time and I will never forget it. I was there for a four week pre-med course. Great memories of the NCO club. They would bring in groups from the surrounding area, many from Memphis. From there I left for Gunter AFB in Montgomery, Alabama. I have to assume I was one of the last airman @ Greenville. I wouldn't have missed it for the world. I am now 68 and I wished I would have done more with my four years in the Air Force.

P.S. Also remember local sheriff/law enforcement coming out to the base to shut down the Officers Club because it was interfering with local bootlegger sales. They were stopped and turned away at the main gate in an exercise of federal-state authority. John Davis

Attended AF Personnel school sometime in 1962-63; I remember watching the firefighters on the runways and although I don't recall the name of the nearby airbase, I remember Air Traffic Controllers looking out of a window to clear incoming flights. Also remember playing golf on on a 9 hole course that was one step up from a pasture. John Davis

I was stationed at GAFB 1954 to 1956 and played the sax in the 3505th AF Band. My first two children were born at the base hospital.
Marching down Main Street in Greenville on holidays was the norm just as marching daily on base to the flagpole to play our national anthem as the flag was lowered.
When the AF decided to experiment with TV recruiting(no color in those days), they flew our band to Channel 12 in Jackson for Saturday morning LIVE PERFORMANCES. NO rehearsals; you had to get it right the first & every time. Band leader, T/Sgt Ted Byer from Texas and one great leader.
I have a b/w photo of the band performing on Channel 12 but can't find a way to attach it to this message.
My dad was station at GAFB I believe between 58-62 his name was Walter William Winston. I was born there in 60. He was an aircraft mechanic don't know what aircraft. Just wondering if anyone knew of him doing that era. He's no longer here physically, but is in spirit. Miss him a lot and I just want to learn his history. Thanks
