Was just browsing the web looking for information on Greenville AFB, Miss. I was stationed there in the summer of 1964 in the medical corpsman school. I only spent three months there but have fond memories of the small base.
It must have closed down shortly after I left there.
Enjoyed looking at the pictures on this website. Thanks

Hi Roger Robertson, well you were not at GAFB long enough to remember anything....LOL. I would not remember the snow, as I was living in LA, CA.
Hi Tom D, thanks for the kudo's about the web site. I don't remember a bowling alley, so I wonder if that was put in after 1955 or if I just don't remember it..........
If anyone has pictures of GAFB or the town, I would sure love to have a copy of them. People, buildings or whatever. email: handyman@usit.net

Hi David Schindel, you did not say where up north and if your girlfriend was local or from up north. I was stationed at GAFB 1953 - 1955, but I don't seem to have the recollection of segregation that you do. Probably because I was used to it. I do remember the guys at the base telling that Nelson street was really a great place for African Americans. I have a base building location map on this web site. Do you remember what buildings you were involved with as student leader? Was the steak house called Doe's?

Hi Bob Evenson, if they hadn't moved the shop section, I worked out of the Electric shop which was right next to the plumbing shop (if I remember correctly.) My civilian supvr (Gene T. Carroll) died a year or two ago. you may have knew him and there is a picture of him and other shop personnel on this web site. I came to GAFB in early 1953 and was discharged there in Aug 1955. There were no WAF's when I was stationed there.

Was born in Greeneville in 1953. Trying to find info as to why we were stationed in Greeneville. Sidney Blanchard was my dad (deceased), Dollie was mother (also deceased). Glad to know there was a base there!

Lots of memories from GAFB. I was stationed there permanent party "62-63". I was in Civil Engineering - plumbing shop. I was a volunteer on funeral details, I was on the firing squad. We traveled all over Miss. and into Louis. burying anyone with military rights. Had a good time at the pool. We would climb over the wall at night and go skinny-dipping, was'nt always just guys either. There were lots of WAF's there in Medic's and Personel schools. Played alot of football there, won Base Championship in "63".

I was stationed there the Spring of 1964 in the Personnel School. I was a student leader, (wore placards on the shoulders of my uniform.) Graduated first in my class. Had my choice of bases for my first assignment and picked Ramstein but my girl friend talked me out of going overseas and I ended up at Richards-Gebaur in Kansas City. I was a northern boy, so was shocked at the racism that still existed in Greenville at the time. I remember taking the bus into town and the black airmen getting off before we got to the center of town. Two separate entrances to the movie theater. Separate water fountains. There was a restaurant/butcher shop in town. You entered the restaurant at the back of the building, they had great steaks. One of my jobs as the student leader was to wake the personnel students up in the morning. I did this by walking down the street between the barracks yelling "wake up, wake up" Seems pretty silly now. Then everybody would form up in front of the barracks and we would march over to the chow hall. There's more but if anybody else who reads this remembers this time I hope you will respond.

I attended Personnel Specialist school there. Would have been Nov 61 to Mar 62 I believe. Got three inches of snow while there and it completly shut down the town. Don't really remember too much of the base or area. Went on to serve 24+ years in uniform and almost 20 more in civil service with the USAF, finally retiring at the USAF Academy for good in Mar '04. Got my first (A3C) stripe while there. Remember how proud I was. My God, where did 48 some years go to?

Thanks for the site. Great job. Many thoughts from those days. Was stationed there for the crash rescue course. Nov 61 to about feb 62. Then to NAHA okinawa. We never had a lot of chances to go to town so don't remember too much. A lot of beer was spilled in the bowling alley and snack bar. Retired from the fire service in 2002. Hope every one has just a grest day.
