MessageThis text message is for anyone stationed GAFB who was in the Medical Helper course from December 1963 - April 1964. I remember when I arrived at the base at night from Lacklandthat it was extremely cold and just a few days before Christmas. In the says and weeks that followed, it snowed and when we marched it looked like the domino affect, people would loose their footing in the street and suddenly be in the pavement. While there in school I contracted the measles and spent several days in the hospital all during our last week on the obstacle course. From GAFB I went in to Gunter AFB in Montgomery Alabama to the Dental Specialist class and then permanently to Turner AFB in Albany Ga. I would be interested to hear from anyone stationed at GAFB during this time.

MessageGAFB was the single most positive influence that Greenville ever had. I grew up in Greenville. I remember my first dance (10 years old).. The air shows on Independence Day, the Lake Ferguson boat rental and all kinds of other great things that the Greenville area residents were able to enjoy because of the base. After the base was closed, Greenville started a downward spiral that continues to this day. While the base was there, Greenville enjoyed a vibrant economy, the cities population was at it's highest (44,000?), the public schools enjoyed a positive influence from kids from different places and cultures. Now, most industry has fled, high unemployment continues, the population is around 34,000, crime is rampant, downtown is almost dead... It's just sad. The Delta is the poorest area in the nation... If the Government really wanted to rescue or improve the Delta, they should reopen the base ASAP the base would provide jobs for the area that the rich Delta soil just can't grow...The state's Representatives, Senators, Governor, Civil Rights organizations should all be working 24/7 to achieve this. The base was a major influence on not only Greenville, but the whole Delta.

MessageThis is in response to Ken Weygant. We may have been in the same class there @ GAFB. I too took that long bus ride from LAFB to GAFB. It was a day or so before the 4th of July holiday in 1964 if I recall. I too went on to Gunter for the medical course there. GAFB was a great place and I hold very fond memories of those weeks there. My bucket list includes a return visit to GAFB one of these days. I am now 71 and my how the years have flown by. I too have wondered if these many years were good to the guys I served with. I sure hope so. I guess I have regrets that I did not do more with my 4 years. But I did what they told me to do and went where they sent me. Greatest four years of my life! I am more prouder of those four years than all the rest in my life. My best, Ronnie Salyer [email protected]

MessageI am responding to William McCarthy. Your name sounds very familiar. I arrived at GAFB around July 3rd, 1964 and was there for the 4 week medical course and then on to Gunter. Were you in my class by chance? Ronnie Salyer

MessageWent through the basic Personnel course there from October 1962 until January 1963. We were in the old, two story WW-2 barracks and marched to class every day. Classrooms were located near the runway. I was there during the Cuban Missile Crisis and was assigned to guard the base water tower one afternoon. I'm proud to report that the water tower never moved once during my tour of duty.

MessageWas stationed at Greenvile AFB in July-Aug 1963 for primary medical training. I remember that we could rent a boat and go out on the Mississippi river. There was also a club where there were dances held and girls were bused in from town to the dance. We had a lot of nice clean fun with no alcoholic beverages allowed.
