MessageI am wondering why the store was closed...does anyone know?
I have just read "Between Silk and Cyanide" by Leo Marks, Ben Marks' son, who refers to the shop in his fascinating book about his work in encryption. He seemed, in 1946, to plan to take over the store from his Dad.

MessageWhat a most wonderful site you have got to keep
Helene and Frank' s memory alive. The book has
changed my life. Wayback in 1992 I sent Helene
a book with poems on the underground. She most kindly responded and I treasure her letter.
I do wonder though where all her books have gone
and hope they are kept together in one place.
I do love second hand (English) books and always try to pick some up when I am back in England
just as Augustine Birrell did more than 100 years
before.

MessageI loved the movie. From the beginnen to the end about books and a bookstore, the friendship between Frank and Helen.
My first tripp to London with my late husband was off course a visit to Charing Cross Road. I went there again after his dead.
So many good memories, we shared the love for books. On my last visit to London I bought more books than I could carry.
My access to English books is limited. The libary has not all I want to read and I am forever on a budgett. Luckely Marks & Co where not the only shop to find second hand and rare books.

MessageHave just come across this site. Absolutely exquisite and full of superb information.

I'll give a more detailed critique (how insufferably pompous!) when I study further. However, it's wonderful to be reassured that bibliophiles still exist!
