MessageHaving just read the book in one go, I want to share my feelings about it.
First of all, the reading has been quite comforting since it has taken me to the place of my dreams: London. Besides, I feel happy and sad at the same time, because of the love between Helen and Frank, (such a moving story!). I feel sad they didn't meet but relieved for Frank's wife...
I have never written a review after reading a book, for the pleasure of it, but I must say it's being a marvellous experience.
To sum up, I promise I'll recommend this book to everyone I know.
P.S: I'll look for Charing Cross the next time I go to London (soon hopefully!).
Sorry for my English...(I'm an English-lover but Spanish by birth...)

Messagep.s. My father died on November 27, 2010. In truth what I find in Helene's story, in the film....is love between people who never met. It was strong and it was very powerful and moving. And in reading posts from others from round the world....It tells me that we are ALL the same....we want acceptance....and we want to recieve and to give love w/o fear. Helene, Frank, Nora, Sheila...had that...we all want it. This is in part why her story touches us from around the world.
Thank you for your site.

David

MessageHaving only recently read Helene's book and also seen the movie.....what jumps out at me is this....the love between people who had not met. Between Helene and Frank, and then between Helene and Nora......One of the most romantic works I have ever read w/o there being an actual romance.

Makes me wish I had been able to go to Marks rather than Foyles or W H Smith.

MessageI just watched the film 84 Charing Cross Road on Netflix here in New York City. I was too young when the movie originally came out, and amazingly, I had never heard of it until it was suggested for my queue. What a delightful treat!

I was so touched by the correspondence between Helene and Frank, and then to discover your wonderful site... it's little things like this that remind me of how the world can be a magical place after all, that there are still warm-hearted people out there admiring the glory of the written word.

To think that Helene and Frank developed such a connection yet never got to meet... so sad. I have a friend studying at Cambridge. Maybe I should go visit her before it's too late. At least Anne Bancroft got to enjoy 45 extraordinary years with Mel Brooks!

Thank you for adding a little slice to life, with this profoundly moving site of yours. Please keep it up!

All the best,
Adam

MessageI will never stop loving Helene Hanff's books and the movie "84, Charing Cross Road". I was on that very road when I was 17 years old, while visiting England for a month in 1969. Little did I know! I had to have passed 84, no two ways about it. *sigh* Wish I could find the H.H. biography, which supposedly be written a few years back, but is now nowhere to be found. Rest in peace, Helene---I'm sure you and Frank had a wonderful reunion!

MessageThe film will be shown on Friday 17 September 2010 by the Friends of the Library at Prospect, South Australia. Thanks to a proper celluloid copy being held (for special uses) in the national film lending collection, we will show reel-to-reel. And talking to each other while the reel is changed. Just as was done in Helene's day.
