MessageDear Friend,

We are thingNY, a collective of composer-instrumentalists based in New York City. On Saturday, December 19, 2009, we will be presenting a concert called SPAM, based on responses we get to this very email. Congratulations! If you're reading this email, you've been selected to write us some music - even if you've never written music before. It could be a few words, a notated score, a set of instructions, a drawing, a video of your dog, your favorite photo of Leonard Nimoy, or anything else you can imagine. It could even be something that takes a second or two to perform.

Please send your new work to thingNY@gmail.com and be sure to include your name and where you're from. Any reply that we receive has the potential to be included in whole or in part. You are, of course, welcomed and encouraged to attend the performance, which will be held at the University of the Streets in New York City. Please forward this email to your friends, family, and acquaintances - let's make this a great show! We look forward to receiving your composition, and we promise we will do our best to satisfy your artistic desires.

Best wishes,
Paul (percussion), Jeff (violin), Isabel (cello), Gelsey (vocals), Erin (saxophone), Alejandro (clarinet)

thingNY is a not-for-profit collective of composer-performers

MessageSorry for the double post - but I had to echo Peter Burns' plea. I too am a huge fan of the Dune series and out of all the directors I've seen try to hack at it, I think you are the best person for such a job. It's a book as richly complex as your movies, and only you could do it justice on film. I think this was one idea that was part of that conversation with my friend after watching The Fountain, and I waived it off as too unlikely. But a man can hope, can't he?

And I too have seen Pi and it is also one of my favorites. I've also seen Requiem for a Dream, but I felt it lacked the same vision as Pi and The Fountain. Still, it stands on its own as a work of art and excels far and above anything else coming out of Hollywood.

MessageHey, I just wanted to lend some support and tell you I am one of your greatest fans. I've never seen another writer/director who truly captures the essence of the kind of art that cinema really is. Your films are richly complex and thoughtful and thought provoking and I am in awe of your cinematic genius.

I want to say The Fountain is one of my all-time favorite films. After watching it with a friend we spent hours discussing its symbolism and metaphor and the more we talked about it, the more we appreciated its complexity and style - which we already enjoyed from the beginning.

I hope you keep making films. I predict someday you'll be appreciated for the talent you really have. Film schools will showcase your movies as the ideal of cinematic and artistic genius and you'll be compared with Michelangelo, Da Vinci, and Picasso as one of the greatest artists of all time. Some of us already think so, and I wanted you to know it. Thanks so much for the talent and vision you share with us.

You are my Idol. your films are of artistic merit. I read 'the founatin' was a flop, but I watched it about 15 times and each time I understand a bit more.
also Pi is a very artistic movie. but no one wants to watch it with me, because it's too artistic for them I guess. thank god, there are directors like you, who doesn't care about the mainstream. Keep on doin what you did, sry for my bad english and have a nice day!

greets from germany
