MessageMY GRANDFATHER, LAMAR W. BIVINS, WAS IN THE U.S. NAVY FROM 1941-1961. I KNOW VERY LITTLE ABOUT HIS ADVENTURES BECAUSE HE PASSED AWAY WHEN I WAS ONLY 4. I KNOW THE USS RANDOLPH WAS ONE OF THE SHIPS HE WAS A CREW MEMBER. WHEN HE RETIRED IN 1961, HE WORKED AT THE NORFOLK SHIPYARD AND WORKED ON THE USS ENTERPRISE. I AM HAVING A HARD TIME TRACKING DOWN ANYONE WHO KNEW HIM.

I JUST WANTED TO THANK EVERY ONE OF THE SAILORS AND THEIR FAMILIES FOR WATCHING OVER US.

MessageI was TAD aboard the Randolph from 8 Nov. 1960 to 14 April 1961 and spent my entire time in drydock at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (chipping paint and shining brass). I had left USS Lake Champlain in August 1960 where I had volunteered for duty aboard USS Kitty Hawk as part of the commissioning crew. I was assigned to V-4 Division on Randolph, since that was my division on Lake Champlain. I made some great friendships in V-4 Division. I served aboard Kitty Hawk from commissioning in April, 1961, until I was discharged in August, 1962. Just recently (August 2008) was aboard Kitty Hawk for her final voyage from San Diego to Bremerton (was one of 38 plankowners that made the trip). Then I went back to Bremerton for her legacy decommissioning ceremony in January 2009. The only name I can remember from V-4 Division Randolph is Benny Hargis. He was from somewhere in Arkansas. My email address is sbburns@aol.com
