MessageG'day to all> My father was an Australian (8th Div) POW in Changi then later in Osaka. He luckily missed out on the railway. He has been gone now more than 23 years. He often spoke of Pat O'grady whom I understood to be a Houston survivor but have been unable to locate on the survivors list. When Dad died I informed Pat by phone in I think NYC or New Jersey somewhere, (I have lost the little book).About 30 or so years ago Pat visited Dad here in Sydney and his mode of transport was USAF Starlifter but as a civilian.Does anyone out there have any knowledge of Pat and what became of him.I hope that I have his surname spelling correct. All my good wishes to you all, have a very Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year. Keep up the good work.Peter Boyne.

MessageRecently learned from my dad that a cousin of his, Joe (Joseph E. Dillon), served aboard the USS Houston. Joe perished during the Houston's final battle at Sunda Strait. Having until now known next-to-nothing about this theater of the war, I am grateful to everyone responsible for making this information available on the world wide web. Thank YOU!

MessageG'day to all, I am a serving CPO in the Royal Australian Navy, I am now shore posted but in August Last year I had the honour to be the Commisioning CPO Coxswain on a ship that shares a proud History with USS HOUSTON. Namely HMAS PERTH (3)(our commisioning Lady was the daughter of Allen Gee a Perth 2 survivor and a number of veterans attended). On our first SE Asian deployment we stopped in the Sunda Strait and took time out to remember the gallant crews of both ships. It was a very moving moment in time. I was just in the "Gunplot" this is a website run by a former RAN CPO, there is an account of the battle (albeit from Perths point of view) that made me want to check out your site. Keep up the good work. Fair Winds and Smooth Seas to all.

MessageRead with sadness the passing of Wilber Smith in June 2006 , my wifes Uncle was Wilbers best friend on the Houston and after the war was declared dead and for all those years no one knew what happened until on one of the Houstons websites I left a message if anyone knew anything and Mr Smith sent us a letter telling us that for 60 years he had searched for family of Milton May to tell them what happened ,of course over the years his Mother and all his brothers and sisters had passed away, but he provided the answer to my wife how and what happened, God bless the Smith family

MessageI am reading the book "Ship of Ghosts" by James Hornfischer, a wonderful tribute to the brave sailors and marines of the USS Houston. Is Captain Rooks' "Estimate of the Situation" available somewhere?

Thanks for the opportunity to explore more about the crew and the ship.

Best Regards,

Claude

MessageMy uncle went down with the Houston. His name was Sigmund "Ziggy" or "Ski" Ustaszewski. If anyone knew him, I'd love to hear from you. He was a wrestler and we just discovered some pictures of him wrestling in a ring on the ship. Does anyone know of anyone who may have been on the wrestling team. My uncle was a Pharmacist Mate on the Houston. Does anyone know of any of the other Pharmacist Mates that served on the Houston. Thank you! Mary Ann Schwab
