MessageStark thought provoking images. I remember Mount Leader with its roof mostly intact not that long ago (I'm only in my early 30s). I suspect there was some scavenging of any lead flashing and probably slates too.
You'd have to suspect the owners had insufficient means to keep it and too much pride to sell it to someone who did. I don't recall it being offered for sale at any time in the last 20 years.

MessageWhat a lovely website. I was hoping to find out some more information about the Blakes and I was not disappointed. Really delightful photographs. If you have any further information about Sir John Blake and his connection with the Davies family I would be intrigued to receive it. My grandfather was Thomas Edward Trafford Blake Davies. His father, Henry Blake married Emily Trafford in Dublin. How was Henry linked to Sir John Blake? A visit to Galway last week and a visit to Menlo and Cregg castles have revealed nothing!

MessageLove your photographs, such a great collection of our architectural heritage. I especially like the Turnpike handball alley, which my grandfather built. I remember playing in there as a child.

MessageHi Tarquin,
Ive just acquired a copy of your book after havg, regretfully, missed your lecture and exhibition at the Kinsale Arts Week where I was on holiday.

The book is an intriquing read and I was espcially delighted to see Bellgrove House featured as this house has belonged in my mother's family since the days of the Land Commission. It has been the subject of much historical, folklore and wildly speculative discussion on many occasions.

Best wishes with your continued work.

MessageHi,
Your pictures of Ballyturin House in Galway brought back special memories for me. My Grandfather bought it in 1939 after he retired from the Munster and Leinster Bank in Gort. My Grandparents lived there until about 1955, when they sold it to move back into Gort, after their sons had moved away.
The person they sold it to stripped all the timber from the house and the surrounding trees were also cut down.
My dream would be to win the lottery buy it back and rebuild it exactly as it was.
Regards
Jackie

MessageI can't believe I missed your exhibition in Galway.
I only just discovered the website tonight by accident, looking for something else, when I came across the title.
Are there any further exhibitions this year?
Have you seen "Rockingham House" in the Lough Key Forest Park, Boyle, Co. Roscommon? I can give you some info if you're interested. Maybe it's in your book, I'll check it out.

T.B> Thanks Paula, Rockingham is indeed in my book. My exhibition is going to Naas, Co. Kildare in September and Limerick city October/November. I'll put details up closer to the time.

MessageI recently was in Ireland in vacation. I had visited the art museum in Dublin after viewing the Book of Kells at Trinity College when I discovered your book! Absolutely fantastic! I picked up your book 3 times but could not seem to release it(I was concerned about luggage weight limits) I made the decision to buy it because I could not seem to release it and airline regulations be damned! It is one of my most treasured souvenir of my holiday. Upon returning to our tour bus the following morning with my fantastic purchase, our tour guide, a native Irishman, quickly spotted my find and inquired if he could look at it. I am grateful for your hard work and recording these places before they have all disappeared. I only wish I could have been with you to help photograph and research the history of these ghostly shells of former mansions and castles! Thank you! Sincerely, Stephanie Castor smilie smilie

MessageMy partner and I recently travelled the Uk and Europe for 3 months. I was interested in seeing things off the beaten track, going to the dark and haunted places, exploring the heart of countries not museums and tourist attractions. When we got to Ireland we came across your site. We went to a lot of locations listed on your site. Some of the most amazing memories and beautiful photos I have of our travels are exploring these beautiful decaying castles and abandoned mansions. It really set the itinerary for the rest of our journey through Europe and I picked up a new interest; exploring and documenting the beautiful and forgotten parts of the world we live in. Thank you! I love your site, keep up the great work! smilie
