MessageYour blog is amazing! I have not had time to read it all yet but enjoyed tour comments on the Tridentine mass - I love latin unlike my son.

Love to all

MessageI couldn't agree with you more. As you know we will lose Father Alan who is assiduous in visiting his parishoners and also has lunch once a month with the ministers of the other Charlton Kings churches. I can only pray that our new priest has the same priorities. I am a convert and have no experience of the old rite but learnt Latin at school and can appreciate the Agnus Dei, the Sanctus etc as part of a vernacular Mass. It will be interesting to see how many people turn up on Saturday and whether this becomes a regular event. There may be quite a number of young people who attend as I understand that the Works of Faith group are keen to return to the old ways

MessageRight on! I walked out of an otherwise beautiful ENO production of Handel's Alcina because of the appalling English libretto and an annoying smuttiness in the direction that seemed like something out of an Earl's Court drag show rather than an enchanted island of love. I see from a bit of recent web research that ENO has also staged a lot of Eurotrash productions recently. Both these practices come from the same idea that great opera and theater can't speak for themselves and somehow have to be "improved" or made "accessible" to a larger audience, i.e., through the monstrous egos and conceits of trendy directors. I certainly won't waste my time and money on ENO productions and I hope that the whole enterprise sinks into the tarn for good.

Well done on this excellent blogsite. Ever since your son Edmund trained us on blogging for our bike ride from Land's End to John O'Groats I have become a convert. This site takes the art form to new heights. Glad you enjoyed OAE and Glyndebourne so much - we did too, not least because of being accompanied by our 'flexible friends'!

MessageWhat a great site, Martin. I haven't seen it since you added the blog. Great way for us Anglo-Americans to keep in touch with what's going on in England and across the Channel. I'm going to make regular visits. As always, I love your beautiful photos of England. Makes me feel quite nostalgic.
