MessageCam should have his roster reset following the January midseason draft. Give him the opportunity to get his house in order up till that point. I would like to hear Shane's comments on this. I'm sure he has been following this closely from the outside, now is the time to chime in Chow.

MessageThats not even a discussion that warrants thought IMO. So Dan, what you are saying is...its OK for a contending team to draft young guys but rebuilding teams shouldn't. Having young guys drafted as "bench players" would be fine if there was no such thing as injuries.

And exactly what's wrong with having Schenn or Hodgson fill one of my roster spots...I'm rebuilding, thats the point.

This may sound like a rant, but I'm more just curious why this has become such an issue when its been happening for years. Maybe I should just take it as a compliment and move on...

MessageI will officially cast my vote for the rule change effective next season.

I don't think it's fair to force Cam to alter his gameplan, wether or not he planned to be short a forward through both redrafts. I also don't think a new rule should ever be imposed during the season unless there is unanomious support for it.

Messagewe can't really make cam do anything since rob told him he was good to go. like i said, don't force cam to take a forward (or trade for one)..

the issue that is grey that has been touched apon should be more of an offseason discussion.. the one difference i'd like to point out is that picking an ellis/backlund for your bench is different than having them in your active lineup.

one day i would like to discuss what makes a "suitable" active roster player.. if we don't discuss it, then it becomes acceptable to have ellis/backlund/markstrom types as a active roster players, which is the same as an empty roster spot..

i think we all need to get on the same page for what is acceptable for some of these situations.. whatever we end up deciding is fine, it's just that we need clarification... again, this is next year chatter from my perspective (or whenever i start my rebuild) ..

MessageAs I've mentioned NUMEROUS times, I will not be forced into taking a forward in the upcoming draft. Nor will I be forced into trading for a forward.

I can guarantee a minimum roster after the second midseason and that's the best I can do.

MessageCam needs to have a full compliment of roster spots by midnight Dec. 31 in order to ice a full roster for Jan 1. That is my vote.

MessageMy thoughts
* Seems all are agreed that a new rule is needed to enforce minimum rosters. Only question is when to enforce it (Dan - immediately, Epp - year end, Cam - after Jan midseason, Commish - Jan 1)
* My vote is that Jan 1 is good. Since the 2nd midseason draft is mid-Jan this allows Cam ample time to trade, or use one of his two mid-seasons to get a forward (as he said he was going to do anyways). Note that a rule going into effect Jan 1 happens AFTER the roster changes so Cam would be short a roster spot till the end of Jan. So Rob, Cam, and I are all voting for the same thing
* I'm not going to quibble over it happening sooner. Given the AWFUL performance of the Terror this month it is clear that he will be in last by year end
* As for who can be drafted onto an FHL team. I was under the impression that as long as they were property of an NHL team they were fair game. i.e. Taylor Hall was unavailable to be picked at our last draft. However, this does pose an interesting scenario when a player 'retires', is not dropped off the FHL team, and then decides to make a comeback. It is such a fringe case that I don't really care. If somebody wants to hold onto an old timer, go ahead
* Rob-no real rush on the rulebook anymore. But it should definitely be online for all to see. You can just photocopy it and send it to me if you want and I'll type it up
* Phil-I hope you backed up your Geocities site because Geocities has been vapourized from the interwebs :-

MessageI agree that it would be incredibly difficult and pretty stupid to judge the merits of players GM's draft and try to decide collectively if they qualify as a legit FHL pick.
Also, it's easy to tank a team without short changng the roster.
I'm fine with saying all roster spots be filled at the beginning of each month - whatever happens during the months i irrelevant.
I also don't think the rule should come into effect until the beginning of next season.

MessageI would vote that as long as a team has the minimum number when the month end roster deadlines are due, then its fine.

MessageRob said 1G... we should obviously make it 2?

And, as far as defining who's eligible, as long as they are eligible to play in the NHL (Drafted or Free agent eligible) they can be drafted (This is the current rule and doesn't need to change). Plenty of reasons why restricting this would be a problem.

Finally, one loophole which needs to be resolved? or clarified...

Can a team drop below the min roster size within the month as long as they acquire the missing piece before month end? I.e. Is Cam's williams deal okay in the future if he commits to adding a roster F through trade somewhere else? I can see this coming into play especially when future considerations are involved.
