MessageHi there. I came across your site, and I was suprised at one major tracksite left off your list of places in the U.S.: Picketwire Canyon in southeast Colorado (just south of LaJunta). It is, in fact, considered the largest tracksite in N. America. I'm sure it's remote location leaves it off most people's list, but I have to say that the contemplative quiet of the area only adds to the allure - my husband and I went twice during the fall of '06, both times on Mondays, and we were the only people in the canyon.

The canyon is in the provision of the US Forest Service, and their info on it can be found on the website for the Comanche National Grassland. There are plenty of other sites that speak of it that can be found with a Google search. You can read my review of the overall hike of Picketwire Canyon on trails-dot-com.

I am sad to say that the location was once part of Pinon Canyon Army Training area that is just down the canyon from the tracksite, and it is part of the planned expansion of that training area. Once the Army gets it back, it will be lost to the public forever, so get there while you can.

Thanks for the good information. I hope the site remains open. I do include it in my menu of Western Dinosaur Tracksites, which is part of my page entitled Dinosaur Tracks and Ichnology, linked near the bottom of my Paluxy main page. However, I will also add it to the list of sites at the end of my article "Overiew of Dinosaur Tracking."

MessageDr. Kuban,

Are you following the August 2008 stuff about a claim of a new find of dinosaur and human tracks?
Who should analyze the prints?

Response by GK:

First, I wish to clarify that I am not a "Dr." My science degree is a B.A. in biology. Second, you are evidently referring to the "Alvis Delk print," an alleged human tack overlapped by a dinosaur track on a loose block of rock. If would have been best if the print advocates had published a detailed scientific paper on it before making strong claims about it. However, based on the limited information available, I and others have made some preliminary observations and assessments. I have added review of the specimen to my Paluxy website, and welcome any comments in response.

Thanks!

MessageYou might be interested to know that there is a rock quarry between Branson and Kirbeyville Missouri ( on hwy 76)that has been finding man tracks in a particular layer of limestone for several years. There have been several college professors view the tracks but are afraid to publish any findings for fear of being involved in controversy over the contridictory time line. There are also the three toe dinosaur tracks in the same layer of limestone. The limestone is soft like dolomite and deteriates rapidly after being exposed to rain. But the office of the quarry has saved several of blocks of rock with the man tracks in them. The man tracks are not large and appear to be about a size 8 foot. I have seen these tracks personaly and some are really clear like foot prints on the beach in wet sand. I have not been to the quarry in 20 years but I am sure it is still in business wiht all the growth that has happened aroud Branson.

Response by GK:

Thanks for your comments. Your experiences are intersting; however, to be scientifically credible, when when extraordinary claims are made, they need to be backed up with more than anecdotal accounts. Can you provide the specific location or name of the quarry, or any photos or other clear documentation of these prints, so that we can confirm their existence and better judge their appearance and significance?
Thanks.
