MessageHey again.
Some difficulties always show up.. at least you got only 0* , here on middle of norwegian coast it yet -12*, but the old Chevy
running,on spiketyres !

I fix the connection for the column- rack with use of a coupling from a Chevy Suburban, who´d i took apart, and reworked it for the Van connect
in one end. This is longer than the van connection.
Then you could make your column sit a little more inside the car, if
columnfastners at dash, are reworked. But the tilt is nice to have
too..

The discs from the 79-80 olds was approx 10, - 10,5 " in diameter, and
used the small calipers, who also at the Camaro,Monte Carlo, Nova, perhaps the same on the Pontiac too.
If lagrer, you can´t use 14" rims, because of clearence
trouble, if not using newer rims from another car who uses discsbrake.
Mine is set up with BMW 5 series from the late 80s now, who suits as
orginal. The Olds rim was to wide for my shirts in back..... Later it
going to get newworked babymoon rims for the summertyres.

Always all kustomize of the old bombs are of intrest, let me know how
things are going.
I´m stubbern enough to keep on with the straight six. My 250 is exellent
condition, and thinks more fun to perhaps soup it up to pass V8s at strip???
And as you perhaps see, a lot of my fun is to fix things myself, even if
a lot is possible to buy.
See a lot of intrest in finding the sulotions, and see things get okay,
satifaction is great... smilie

MessageHi Roger,
thank you so much for the time you took to give me the info ! In the meantime I made a set of simple brackets for testing and they are under the chevy now, but I made them with 2 mm steel plate , bolted with 4 bolts M8. Your brackets are a lot stronger.
I make a new set with your drawings.

I have put the rack under it , and put in a chevyvan column but forget about the tilt. Now the steering wheel is on my legs so I must go for a adapter + sport-steeringwheel. Never mind, a solution for everything.

Now all is put in and when I turned the steer , the axle with joints went all around the place. So I removed the rag-joint and made it direct. This was the solution on the problem. When I lift the car and turn the steer, there is a slight binding on some points. I took out the axle with the joints and I noticed that the forks of the joints are not in line . Stange for a factory piece. I think thats the problem. With a lot of brute force and a big hammer I took it apart and have made it in line. BUT I did not test it yet because the snow is coming in here as well !! NO,NO,!! 0 degrees is to cold for smile and work outside , don' t you think ?

If it is ok with you, I like to know more about your disk conversion. You told about Olds disks. I am busy to put in the car a pontiac V8 engine, pontiac THM350, propshaft and pontiac rearaxle from a 1980 pontiac lemans. So it gets 1980 drum brakes from pontiac

MessageHi ,
My name is Fred Mulder , I live in Holland and I own a 54 belair 4-door sedan.I have read at your site about the Opel power steering rack you built in your 54 chevy. This is a very beautiful idea. So I have bought the same rack at the junkyard and I am working on putting it in. I have to work on the street so it is not easy(I have no garage). But the biggest problem for me is to set the right angle of rotation related to the frame to make the mountingbrackets and the exact form of the brackets relating to the frame.
Because I am with my back on the ground with the car 15 cm from my nose it is quite difficult to get it al right, and I really like to get it fixed well..
( Now I have seen you did a great job)
Would it be possible if you could email me a simple sketch of the brackets with some sizes , and the location to the frame ?
It wil be really helpful !!
