MessageHi Mr. Mercer,
I feel upon your page by accident on Facebook. I am a Mom of a 16yr old boy, just about your Daniels age when he got sick. I didn't know Daniel, but I can tell you, with every tear that feel down my face as I read about your son, I can see what an anamazing kid he was. I am so sorry for your loss. I know it's been a few years, but how amazingis it that your sons life is still touching peoples hearts. Thank you for sharing him with the world and thank you for your raw honesty. You and Pam are wonderful parents. An example of greatness...I hope you have been able to find peace and many smiles and laughs with your memories of Daniel
Sincerely,
Tammy

MessageJeff and Family,

I wanted to write so much more about Jeff's impact on my life, but ran out of characters to do so. Thanks for gracing my life back in the early days of Jeff's coaching career @ Southport with John Carpenter... I often ponder back to that day when we lost to BC, and wonder what might have been if we would have won that day? That dream always ends with me pitching in Bush Stadium, and SHS winning the state championship... yeah, I would have won that day...

Jeff and Pam,

In case you are curious, Amy and I have four amazing daughters. Ages 16, 15, 13, and 11... Not trying to make you feel old Jeff, just letting you know I gave-up after 4 times of having a son...

Please email me [email protected]

MessageDear Jeff,
We have spoken via phone a few times since Daniel's passing. I never met Daniel, but I know that he must have been an amazing person. I can say that because I had the honor of playing baseball for you @ Southport from 1982-86 and you changed my life in so many ways that are still evident to this day.Comming from a family with limited means, I never thought about going to college, it wasn't even a thought that I had considered until you told me that my left arm could send me to college, and the bigs if I made-up my mind and worked day and night to get there. As my coach and mentor, you did your part by being sure scouts came to see me pitch. I got offers from IU, Michigan, Eastern KY, and UI.
I took the full-ride to UI to be sure I would get a first-rate education if baseball after college wasn't in the cards. None of this would have been possible if you hadn't came into my life in the summer of 1983. I still have the letter you wrote and mailed to me after graduation from SHS in 1986, wishing me the best upon entering college. I had a solid 4 year-run, but a shoulder injury during my senior year took away my dreams of playing professional baseball.
I was devistated for about a year, but I had gained a first-rate education for free, and that's more than most of my friends can say.
Now 22 years after I graduated from SHS, you and my wonderfull parents are still the rock that helps me roll-though life. God Bless, tell Pam I said hello...

Dennis.
