| Message | >right side or left side< An age old debate in Malaysia since the 60s. Dear Teluguputrudu, let us go back through the passage of time to have an insight to this argument. In Andhra generally, sarees are worn left side. Our predecessors originate from villages where it is customary to drape the sarees right side. If you want to go further the women then did not even wear saree blouses. The sarees were worn in such a way that they covered the women's modesty just as a saree blouse would. With time our grandmothers adapted to wearing saree blouses as it was unsightly to see civilised Indian women walking around with part of their shoulders bare. Just the right thing to do in a multiracial country like ours. The entire Andhra Pradesh does not depict telugu women in sarees worn right side. We are, like it or not, decendants from that state. If you want to go one step further, saree worn right side is peculiar to a sect of people in Andhra and are slighted upon by people with closed mentality who do not see people as equals in the eyes of God. Let the Malaysian Telugu women be. Our Telugu sisters had been true telugus at heart for being there in Genting irrespective of their attire. The shaktis in my family wear saree right side. I respect others who wear it the other way. Noboby is right or wrong. Let there be unity in diversity. Jai Telugu Thalli!! |
