Who are you?loved one/care provider of WWII Vet
Where you from?Riverside County, So. CA.
Are you a Veteran?inquiring for one!
MessageSirs,
I am desperately trying to get my friend and roommate to the WWII Memorial. He is a WWII Vet., in the Pacific. He is 87 years old and until recently was in very good health. We thought we possibly had time to try and save enough money for the trip. We dont! We are both very low/ disability incomes. Charlie's Alzheimer's is taking it's toll. He is still functioning well, though declining, and his frailty is has become quite evident this past year. Enough so I am desperately reaching out for your help. Charlie has never asked for much if anything (for as long as I have known him, approx 20 yrs) Never complains, etc. He's "mentioned" about "like to see the Memorial"... not once, which would be unusual for him... but multiple times now. I can't stress how unusual this is for him.. thus my determination to get him there.
We will fill out the app on line. My question and problem is: Do you have a policy/program/suggestions on how to accomodate any "care provider" a Veteran might require??
I believe he would be ok to go it alone, although he himself is fearful of the possibility of me not being there... I have become his sense of security w/ the Alz. affecting his sense of confidence and security.
I can't thank you enough for what you do and pray you can give me some ideas.
I am also interested in learning about your volunteer program, requirements, commitments, etc.
Most respectfully,
Robin R. (4 Vet. Charles Hanson)

Who are you?son of a WWII vet
Where you from?Citrus Heights, California
Are you a Veteran?yes
MessageMy Dad was a WWII vet ( Philippines and Australia ) but passed away over 10 years ago. My wife and myself have been to DC twice. Once just after the WWII memorial opened and again in Sept 2009. I feel blessed to have been able to go there and see the memorial. We need to get as many of the vets there as we can. With the WWII vets getting older, there isn't a lot of time left. That isn't meant to be morbid but is to express the urgentcy of the situation.

Are you a Veteran?Yes WWII U.S. Navy Amphibious Force
MessageI was a ships Cook serving on an LST For those of you who do not know what an LST is just picture the movies you've seen of the invasion - the large ships on the beach with bow doors open are LST's = Landing Ship Tanks. Or, as we used to call them "Large Slow Targets" since with flat bottoms we had a top speed of only about 30 knots

We participated in the invasions of Saipan and Tinian in the Marianas and Pellelieu in the Palau group.

I would love to see the Memorial. I am 85 yrs old and able to get around on my own without the eed of help from gUARDIAN

Who are you?Retired Navy Storekeeper Chief
Where you from?Boston, MA/ San Diego,CA
Are you a Veteran?12/24/42 - 6/01/66
Messagesmilie I was a member of an advanced Supply Group, sent to Milne Bay, New Guinea and later Samar, in the Philippies. We loaded and unloaded ships from New Zealand and Australia ferrying supplies to the forward combat zones. Since segregation was still in full bloom, I witnessed Race Riots in both Islands. Very sad to see friends die only because of color. I am 85 now and have never been able find any discussions of what the Navy Supply Units contributed to the War Effort. Also, I wonder if there is still anyone "out ther" who was in Milne Bay NG or Samar PI, 1944-45. Only two of us left, that I know of.
