| Message | I was a member of the US Navy Amphibious Battalion on board the USS Hinsdale APA 120. I landed on IWO JIMA at Blue Beach and after being relieved by another Battalion; we went back to our ship and took many wounded to GUAM for hospital services. After leaving Guam, we went to Saipan and picked up the 2nd. Marine Div. for the Okinawa invasion. We were hit by a Kamikazi suicide plane with 2 bombs on April1st,1945,Easter Sunday,April Fools Day;we were towed to Kerama Retto and after the hole in our ship was repaired,we were towed to Mog Mog in the Caroline Islands. After one Engine was repaired,we sailed to Hoboken,N.J.(Sinatras) home town.We arrived in Hoboken on 2 July,1945.We stayed there for a complete Overhaul and repairs. After 30 leaves for our crew, the WAR was over and we made one last trip to Sasebo,Japan and picked up about 1000 Soldiers and took them to San Francisco for discharge as the War was over and they wanted to go HOME. We then made our "LAST" trip on the "HINSDALE" TO Newport News,Va. for De-Commissioning and removing our ship from the Navy Register. We all left our ship in May 1946, after turning it over to the Maritime Commission. I was separated from the Navy with a "Battleship" discharge. After the Korean War broke out, I entered the Merchant Marine Service and sailed to Pusan,Korea on board as part of the crew of the USNS Mission Carmel (a tanker carrying aviation gasoline) |
