MessageHaving seen the review of the hotel now situated in the old school buildings , I think the last suggestion for the plaque would refer more to the hotel than to the school .

Still , must be worth a visit . The virtual tour was interesting .

Great idea for a plaque

MessagePOSSIBILITY OF COMMEMORATIVE PLAQUE ON OLD SCHOOL BUILDING - NOW 'LEOPOLD SQUARE'.
A few of us are keen to have a plaque placed on the Orchard Lane building, giving a potted summary of the history of the building, including reference to City Grammar School. Jeanette Aston (ne Attwood - 1954 - 61) has very kindly been to discuss this with one of the City Council's building surveyors, who seems to think a suitable plaque could be installed, subject to planning permission (listed building) and suitable design. HAS ANYONE ANY IDEAS/COMMENTS on the wording/style of this proposed plaque? Please respond as soon as possible if you have any ideas. Jeanette is hoping to visit the owner of one section of the building who, we believe, will be sympathetic. She will discuss the possibilities with him.

Best regards to all!!

Paul Clarke (1954 - 1961)

MessageI attended CGS 1946-1951. The first year was one of powercuts and the master or mistress sitting on the window sill reading to us (it was too dark in classrooms to read for yourself) the school day ended at 3.20p.m. for this reason. Textbooks were always backed with brown paper, and frequently had pages missing, so you just shared with your neighbour. Five coloured crayons were provided in form 1 to last for five years ..... if you lost or wore out equipment then you were expected to seek out a replacement.
I am still in contact with five of my classmates:
Roy Wells, Jean Wells (nee bussey), Irene Milnes (now living in Arnside in Cumbria), Brian Darwent, and Gordon Shephard.
Memorable places around the school:
The Noted Pie shop in Leopold St, which would dispense an positively enormous sandwich for three old pence, and 'Desparate Dan's' in Cambridge St, where the proprietor stood in the window and dispensed portions from a large meat and potato pie which was baked in a large enamel washing-up bowl (we always checked to see if a pair of horns or a cow's tail was showing from under the crust just as in Desparate Dan's adventures in our comics).

MessageHi everyone,

I attended City from 1967-1973. Was in Miss Johnsons form in the first year, I remember skirts had to be 4 inches above the knees when kneeling.

Would be great to get in touch with a couple of my good friends from that time, Elizabeth Bennett and Denise Johnson(I have been trying to find them, with no luck:-()

I remember a lot of the names I've seen on these pages, I recall doing a lot of drama with some of them.

If anyone remembers me, or better still has a photo anywhere with me on it I'd love to hear from you. smilie [email protected] or [email protected]

MessageI attended The City Grammar school between 1955 and 1960.
On leaving school, I went into the Civil Service in an Accounts
environment. Apart from the years spent having my two children, I
worked in Accounts environments. I am now retired and loving
every minute of it.
