MessageGreetings to all! My 'father-in-law' David Rehmeyer was a plank owner of the Spangler. I attended the 2003 reunion with him and his wife, Nancy and his daughter, Dana (my wife). It was a wonderful experience and I've documented it on video and still photo's. I'll try to put together a DVD this winter and make it available for a nominal cost to cover shipping and materials.

This website looks terrific! I hope it will grow richer over the years to come.

MessageGreetings Veterans! I just wanted to wish all of you a Happy Veterans Day and thank you again for your service. There are no words that can express fully our gratitude to you and your families. I enjoyed reading about the reunion and hope I can attend some day. Wayne, due to a death in the family I haven't been able to look for more memorabilia on Donald, but I will when I can get back home. May you all enjoy the Thanksgiving Holidays and God Bless our Veterans!

MessageIn reviewing the sea tales and the story about the shipmate that reenlisted and then was killed in an auto accident brought to mind another shipmate that was killed in an auto accident, His name was Lew Ayres RD2. He came aboard in 53 after having served at a radar station in Japan. We never knew what happened only that he was hitching a ride fro downtown San Diego one night and was killed in an auto accident. It fell my lot to go with the Exec Lt Buart Huls to the naval hospital at Balboa to make a positive ID. He was trussed up like a piece of meat in a cold storage locker ontop of another body. It was a very difficult aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaathing for me to have to do and I was disgusted at the way his remains were treated. Dick Hitt RDSN cleaned out his locker and wrote Lew's girlfriend a letter of condolance and returned all of the letters that Lew had received from her. All of the Radar gang signed the letter.

MessageHello Shipmates,
I served on the Spangler 1957-1958, SK-SN up untill we decommisioned it at Astoria Oregon (Tongue Point Naval Shipyard) Yes, I too have many good memories of my tour of duty while we sailed up and down the west coast from Juneau Alaska to the Panama/Balboa canal zone. I was also on the USS Johnson DE-583 when we decommisioned it just before I was assigned to the Spangler in 1957. I always felt very fortunate to have served with such a great group of men.

MessageI served aboard from 11-50 to 05-54 in the Radar Gang. She was a good ship with a fine crew and for the most part good officers. I am proud to have served on her. My only regert was that I joined the navy to see the world and for the most part all I saw was San Diego and approaches. Capt Law was a good CO and I was saddend atao hear of his demise. I understand that he retired as CO of the Sonar School as a four stripper. If any one has any infor on LtJg Harvely L Smith please pass it on to me. He was truly one of the good guys in the ward room

MessageI served aboard her from 11-50 to 5-54. Going aboard as an SA fresh out of boot camp. We ere in the nav al shipyard at Hunters Point San Francisco. I was assigned to the deck force and spent the next 3 months chipping paint. ONce out of the shipyard I became a Radarman stricker.
Boy did that beat the deck force. IN July 51 I was sent to the class A Radar School at Treasure Island. Came back in November took the exam for 3RD,passed and got my crow in May 52. Made 2nd in May53 and 1st in May 54, just in time to be scharged. I went aboard on a kiddie cruise and got out before I turned 21. You could say that I grew up on board Spangler. She was a good ship and I remember many fine times and good friends even tho I left her more than 50 years ago. While at the Des Base bening transferred I was subjectd to anumber of shipping over talks. Itwas pointed out that I was not yet 21 but that I had made RD1 in less than 4 years. As I was told by a 4 Striper (CO of the base ) son you have a future in the Navy. My response was Captain you are all sweetness and goodness to me now but once I reenlist I will return to being just one more dumb white hat to you, with That I left the US Navy and the chicken ---- behind.
