MessageI love this site and with the help of Lani Douquette we will be updating the web site soon.

I was stationed at K.I. Sawyer most of my career and I am now building a new house just north of the base in Sands. I plan on being here for a long time to come and hope to get more involved with the old base as time permits. Please visit the site often and see the changes as they occur.

MessageSpent a few very chilly years at KI ... 1990 thru 1993 as commanding officer of the Navy's NAVCOMMUNIT Marquette, overseeing the ELF transmitters at Republic, MI and Clam Lake, WI. Still remember leaving the base for the last time in late May 1993 and there were still piles of snow in the parking lots on the base!

MessageHow Awesome! I was stationed at KIS from 82-83 with the SPS. This web site brings back all kinds of memories for me. I absolutely loved my time there, and was sorry to leave.

One story I tell over and over started in mid '83. The 87th FIS commander was PCSing. I sat on the flight line and watched as he made his final flight. I was and am still amazed at what I saw, it was a one man air show.

The F-106 is still one of my favorite aircraft. I remember and probably have pictures of the original 57-0231. You have made my day! Thank you for all your hard work!

I would also like to hear from anyone I served with back then, especially Kevin Swierkosz. (Sp)

MessageGreat Site Great Base. I was at K.I from 74 to 75 with the Security Police ,had to leave to go to Kunsan A.B Korea. Made a visit back up in Sept 2006 to show my wife of 30 years what a wonderful place it is. We had lunch at the Tailwinds, visited the muesuem and purchased lots of Tee's. It's amazing that the Base is still alive. I left two good friends at Sawyer when I had to go to Korea, Rick Masengale and Steve Chase I'm still looking for you. This Georgia Boy will make another trip back to the Base.

MessageMy favorite year in the AF was here in 1972. Made a few yooper friends there and became quite close. Was the 410 OMS Chief Clerk. Extremely memorable year. Love the UP and am almost there now. Only 30 miles from the border in Northern Wisconsin. We had 200 inches of snow that year, so I'm having a hard time convincing my significant other to move FURTHER north. The fishing was fantastic. Am planning on visiting Sawyer this summer for a weekend. Glad I found your site. Anyone from that era remember the night someone threw a wad of dynamite in one of the JP4 fuel tanks? It wasn't a joke. They found it before it went off. What a hairy night that was! All those missles!
