We sailed onBlackadder
From... To... Porstmouth to Dorset
PurposeLevel 1 Clipper Training
MessageRory was 'Mate' for this training week in and around the Solent. Rory helped the Skipper organise us all and was there for us when we needed education , training and/or we got ourselves in a muddle! His enthusiasm, experience and leadership were a great part of the week. Rory is also personally great company and he made sure we were a happy crew during the week, despite some fairly miserable weather.

We sailed onclipper 60
From... To... one week in june 2012
Purposeteaching
MessageRory was one of our 3 teachers on board the clipper 60, during a level one training for the clipper 13-14 race. I can only say that he is a fantastic teacher, has a lot of knowledge to share and is also willing to share it (which is not always the case with others). He is also a marvelous person full of anecdotes.
Hope he has a lot of luck in life

We sailed onMay - June 2010
From... To... Sidney, BC, Canada to Ketchikan, Alaska
PurposeEnjoy both the scenery and the challenge
MessageRory was crew and companion with me (no other passengers) on a 34' powerboat on a delightful cruise from Straits of Juan deFuca to just beyond BC's border with Alaska. Rory's great enthusiasm for the awesome scenery and the wildlife of this remote area added to my own enjoyment for the five weeks we were together. Although his preference is for sailboats, mine is a twin diesel powerboat. He is appropriately safety conscious, and not paranoid about safety. Rory is very competent with electronics and does a good job of reading the currents, tides, winds, anchoring possibilities and challenges. He offered cruising, anchoring, and sightseeing ideas, but was quite agreeable when for one reason or another I over-ruled him. He is a competent and willing cook (and does like his afternoon tea!) He remained conscious of our need to conserve water and energy (no generator aboard.) He was good company, full of stories, but also sensitive to my need for quiet time to read and work. He understood immediately that at my age (75), I needed help in dealing with the dingy, anchoring, tieing up, carrying things; he was a willing helper. He has no bad habits that I could detect!!

We sailed onArtemis, part of Sunvil's flotilla
From... To... Nidri - Vathi - Fiskhado - Kioni - Kalamos - Nidri
PurposeInstruction / flotilla
MessageIf you are looking for a responsible and easygoing yachty then look no further, Rory is your man!
We sailed around the Ionian islands for a week last summer and Rory was our skipper on a boat full of sailing newbies. He was very knowledgeable about all things sailing and kept us entertained with some hilarious travel stories. Not only did he keep us afloat, he also didn't mind keeping a special eye out for our friend's boat (who was bareboating for his first time), as well as being the lead skippper for the whole flotilla of 8 boats in total. I had great fun on the holiday, it was all very laid back and we learned a lot about sailing thanks to Rory.
