MessageJoan,

It was loveley meeting you at the Commonwealth Club. I am so glad to hear that you have raised your garden up. There is no stopping the weather (besides reducing global warming), so we all have to change what we can!

As I said, you are the person I point to when people tell me that it's alright for those of us in California to try to grow our own vegetables, but the rest of the country can't possibly do that. "Oh no, you're wrong! Joan Gussow is doing it in New York." (Far better than I, I might add!)

Again, it was a delight to meet a kindred spirit. I truly believe the changes you have been hoping for and working toward are coming. More slowly than we might hope, but really $10/gallon gasoline is going to be a giant motivator in local food production. And China isn't going away anytime soon!

If you are out this way again, you are more than welcome to visit my gardens.

Birgitt

MessageMs. Gussow,
I read your book "This Organic Life" and truly loved it. I hated for it to come to an end. I am planning on reading some of your other publications soon. I have a question for you. Where do you recommend a person start when they have a large amount of land and feel overwhelmed with this space? I live on 250 acres which has 1500+ apple trees, 2 peach trees (not in great condition), and Concord grapes. We also take care of 120+ beef cattle and raise our own beef from them. I have a dedicated area approximately 40ft x 80 ft for a garden. Next years plans include obtaining 5-10 chickens and a couple of milking goats. I have great interest in gardening without pesticides and recycling. I would appreciate any advice you may have. Also, I live in growing zone 6.
Thank you for all the great instruction in your book and I look forward to reading more of your work soon.

MessageHi Joan- I live in Wilmington, DE and have a small, local food only grocery store here in town. I was asked to do a talk by the local transition town group on eating local food. I was taken back to reading your book years ago as it was so inspiring to me and made eating locally seem like such an adventure. It is still an adventure for me here as my store is open six months now and we are hanging in there and hoping to be sustainable ourselves. I can't believe the pics of your garden! It is funny b/c my store came along when our sewer line broke and we needed 7,000$ to repair it and could only get a home equity loan for 10,000$ so there was my little nest egg to build my store. Funny how life works that way and I am glad that things fell in place so you could build your garden again. I am headed to the library website now to see about your latest book...so excited! Thanks for all you do and for helping to open my eyes to such a wonderful way of living. best, karen

MessageI came home yesterday with your latest book "Growing Older" and found myself glued to it. I took a a break to cook for husband (frozen stuffed zucchini log and pasta -an experiment) and then back to finish the book. I have three vegetable gardens and now I want more. Thank-you for sharing your stories, your knowledge and your feelings. I LOVED the book!!

MessageJoan, thanks for being an inspiration. I am just now reading your "This Organic Life" and feel comforted by hearing you talk about how some people view your message as a burden. I'm a nurse and can identify with the sadness that comes from trying to teach people something that feels so freeing and such a step up from what we're currently doing, and then it's healthy and good for the planet to boot--only to have most people look down and away...We are in our 3rd year of gardening and I never knew things could taste so good!

MessageDear Joan,
I very much enjoyed reading the article in the NY Times about your garden. I remember how I felt when a NJ northeaster demolished my "tall" garden of various kinds of sunflowers. I admire your fortitude to rebuild and improve your garden. I'd love to see it in person. It sounds beautiful-especially the clover walkways. I look forward to reading your books. Thanks for being a leader in an important movement.
