MessageI got stung 12 days ago in North Myrtle Beach, SC while on vacation with my family. I felt something wrap partially around my left arm and shoulder and a second later felt severe stinging in multiple places. Used my right hand to wipe it off and got stung on my right finger. Other than it being VERY painful, I was ok. However ... got out of the water, walked up to the hotel with my husband to get something to put on it, and while in the security office I started getting tightness in my chest and some problems breathing. They dialed 911 and while waiting for the ambulence the tightness in my chest and breathing problems got so-o-o extremely intense and painful that I thought I was going to DIE! While in the ambulence they gave me an EPI shot in one arm and Benedryl in an IV in the other. It seemed to take forever before anything took effect! I kept telling the paramedics my chest was in so much pain and that I couldn't breathe! He kept saying that they were giving my straight oxygen. (I was thinking...what good is that when the air isn't getting inside? It wasn't helping!) Had a rash (or hives?) up both arms, not sure about the rest of the body? By the time we finally arrived at the hospital I was doing better. Later they scraped the stings. When I told the Hotel Director that it was purple. He told me it was a Man O'War, not a jellyfish. Went back on antihistamines again a few days ago, started welting up again. (Hope this info can help someone else.)

MessageMy family is on vacation this week in San Destin, FL - and there were lots of moon jellyfish the past 2 days, and I was telling my family about my run-in with a Portuguese Man of War when I was 14 years old (37 years ago...) while living in Hawaii (Kaneohe, Oahu). I remember the intense pain and stinging that lasted for hours. I went to the ER on a golf cart as the beach was near a golf course.

I was stung because I remember thinking my sister's bathing suit was losing a string, and reached out and actually pulled on what I thought was a string, but was one of the poisonous tentacles. I had not thought of that memory in years until I saw your website.

But without even looking at the pictures I gave an exact description of the man-of-war. smilie And I remember the pain to this day -

I actually still have scars on the fingers of my right hand where the tentacles wrapped around them.

Thanks for a good website.
