| Message | Hi Jenn, It's that time of year again - FSU vs Miami. Both teams are ranked again for the 1st time in years. The school spirit and quest for the ACC title are at a maximum for this storied rivalry. In that regard, I was hoping you could relay a message. I know you have a lot of media access. I am Native American and am not offended by the use of the Seminoles as a symbol of FSU. I know the Seminoles of the Everglades agreed to the use. The only thing that I find offensive is when some (though not all) FSU students say something like "Scalp em - go Seminoles!" I literally dropped one of my FSU friends on facebook last weekend for that reason. I found it racist and derogatory. However, I do not believe that most FSU students who use the "scalp" reference are blatantly racist. They probably just don't know that it's offensive. I still like the use of the Seminole name at FSU. I think it enhances the image of the people who survived the horrible time period of Manifest Destiny, relocation, and smallpox. The "scalp em" slogan is out-of-line though. The history of scalping is horrifying. In the southwestern USA the Spanish colonists used a scalp bounty system against Comanches, Kiowas, Navajos, and Apaches to promote genocide. But usually only the Native Americans are blamed for scalping and stereotyped as savages. And modern Native Americans get offended by being stereotyped as "scalpers" when the history is actually far more complicated. |
