Message | I am the music teacher at Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood, MA. This is an all-boys, Catholic school for grades 7-12. This will be my second year teaching (I just survived my first year). This year, I am trying to get our 7th and 8th graders involved in the choral program. Being still a young and new teacher, I am trying to figure out the best way to work them in. Because of the way our current schedule is structured, I meet with my high school chorus at 7:30am (before the school day starts) 5 days a week. It is impossible right now to get chorus for 9-12 or 7-8 during the day. So, for now, since this is our first year adding 7-8, I am having them join the high schoolers 2 mornings a week for rehearsal and hoping I can pull them out sometime during the day for just 7-8 instruction. I am not sure this is ideal, but it is a start for now. I hope to program music just for the high schoolers, just for the junior high, and then music for both groups combined. I think it is important that eventually we have a 7-8 chorus and a 9-12 chorus. Am I wrong for wanting this or would it be better to just have a 7-12 chorus? I guess I am looking for ideas and music. I want our students to sing in a healthy, natural way, and am trying to encourage this. One of my greatest fears as a teacher is doing something that could hurt their voices. I am looking for more information on how to guide our young men through this so as to keep them singing and involved in high school too! |
