MessageI have only FIVE boys in my Mixed Choir. Two of them are cambiata and the other three are new baritones. I use three part music, which can be frustratingly MISlabeled as SAB.

I ask the boys to carry each other on certain sections and follow these guidelines:

Never force a note. Notes should be free.

If the notes are low, baritones, you have to carry the cambiata.

If the notes are high, cambiata, you have to carry the baritones.

They like this and they feel like they are all in it together, especially for the cambiata who want that 'manly' status of part III. I ask baritones and sopranos to sing together, and altos and tenors to sing together when we learn parts. Its good for their vocal range and helps them understand their place in the harmony. Plus, its great for classroom management because it keeps the kids focused and singing!

MessageDon,
I have nine students presently enrolled in conducting/choral literature - Spring 2009. These students will be student teaching either Fall 2009 or Spring 210. I would like for them to be familiar with and see the value in the scores published by Cambiata Press. I hope to find out if you could supply us with packets of music/and or information about your publications. I will gladly have the students pay for them...full cost/print cost? Whatever may be possible will be fine.
Thank you. I hope to hear from you in the near future. My home e-mail is: [email protected]
Have a great day.

MessageThis spring I am teaching Choral Literature to a group of college students about to enter various K-12 teaching positions. For this class the students must evaluate and report to the class on a number of octavos suitable for K-4, grades 5-8 and grades 9-12 choirs. Would you be willing to assist us by sending sample materials (octavos, collections, or music education materials) in multiples of 4 (the number in the class) for me to distribute to them? I have not taught middle school myself and am seeking the best materials for the students to explore.

If you cannot help with sample materials, what recommendations would you have for changing voices (grades 5-8)?

Thank you for your time and help.

MessageThis spring I am teaching Choral Methods and Materials to a group of college students about to enter various church music or music education positions. For this class the students must evaluate and report to the class on a number of octavos suitable for Children's, Junior High, Senior High, and Adult Choirs. Would you be willing to assist these young adults in their education by sending sample materials (octavos, collections, or music education materials) in multiples of six (the number in the class) for me to distribute to them? It is essential that students be exposed to the publishers and their products. If you are able to assist in this project, it would be helpful to have the materials by February 9, if at all possible. Thank you for your time and help.

Sincerely,

Irv Van Hooser
