MessageMy son graduated 11-21-07. His boot camp was shortened because of holidays. He is now in A School at Great Lakes. He returned after there after smilie Christmas and was the sickest he had been in 19 yr from the flu. Indeed you carry your cell around and look for 847 Area Code and answer no matter what. After boot camp we talk by phone or on MSN every night. Video cam on computers alleviate a lot of worries as you can see them. When they enter at RTC during Graduation is so spine tingling and then hear Anchors Aweigh by them and Finally liberty call is so emotional. The RTC website is how I can keep track of his weather while there at Naval Training Command. He just made it back to day school as for the first 6 weeks was in night school. 12:30 am is real early for this mom. Lots of encouragement and love is great. Remember to allow for at least a 2 week delay from when you write them and they respond. I found out later that the Navy Lodge in Great Lakes is a great and cheap place to stay for graduation. I just returned from there for just a 2 day visit and it was great. I live in far southeast Kansas in Gorilla country so travel to KCI is time consuming but well worth it. His division picture in his dress blues is awesome, speaking as an extremely proud Navy Mom. Keep up the encouraging letters and cards with pictures. Put them all in a box when you see him after boot camp for later reminiscing. I am starting his scrap book from RTC and NTC for future memories.

MessageHi Paige, If he passes his PT ( Physical Training Test ) he should be able to call you in the third week. I know that you don't know when he will be able to call. It's not that frequent while they are in Boot Camp and the calls can come in at odd times. I got calls anywhere from 6am to midnight from my kids while they were in Boot Camp. That is correct that only 4 people can attend the graduation, more can go to Great Lakes but only 4 can go to the actual ceremonies. They can leave base after they Graduate, my kids both went to Chicago on the Saturday and Sunday after they Graduated. They have to be back in the barracks at Boot Camp each night. Yes it is true that the Red Cross can help get him home when you have the baby but that is normally reserved for wives not fiancés so you and he will have to check on that. You can e-mail me at [email protected] with any other questions you have.

MessageMy fiance just joined the navy back in july of this year and he just left for boot camp on the 24th of january. I miss him tremendously and he sent me a letter and he does not like it at all, alot of this information on this blog seems like great information to make me feel a little better about him being far away from me. This week will be his 3rd week in and i am hoping and praying to get a phone call from him. I also wait everyday to get a letter but, i never know when to expect one? I also was reading on the site about graduataion and I saw only 4 people can attend the graduation? Now, can he leave the base when he graduates and go to eat and things or do they have to stay on base? I am really worried about this because i am due to have our baby on april the 9th and his graduation date is march 28th we are only driving distance 3 hours away from great lakes but, if for some reason i go into labor there i need my mom to be with us in case and if she goes that will make more than 4 people?? Help... and also i was told that if we call a red cross number when i go into labor if he is in his a school he will get an emergency flight home.. is this true?

MessageSue, It is usually 8 weeks from when they leave. So if your recruit left on a Tuesday Graduation would be 8 weeks from that following Friday. Graduation is always on Friday. Hope that helps. smilie

MessageThank you for the website telling about graduation. I understand that dates may fluctuate but generally speaking, does it occur about 9 weeks after a recruit enters boot camp? I am trying to get a general time frame. Thank you for your help

MessageYou will get a letter from your recruit on when his or her graduation will be but you can also look at the Recruit Training Command website ( I will post the link on the front page of my log today ) each week and when you see their Division you will know the dates. I had two kids go through Navy Boot Camp last year and we couldn't attend either Graduation because of expense and health issues. According to my kids about 50% have family attend. The planning for graduation could be a real problem if you live far away. You will find out the graduation date a few weeks before graduation and even then that date could change for your recruit if he becomes ill or fails to pass a test in boot camp. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask and you can also e-mail me at [email protected]

MessageMy nephew just started Navy boot camp at Great Lakes in the middle of January(2008) How does his family find out when his graduation is in order to make plans to go? Do most graduates have family members attend? It is far away and requires a bit of planning.
