MessageHi Ruby!
I just moved to Bury about 3 weeks ago and have enjoyed reading your blog. My husband and I arrived here from the States to be stationed at RAF Lakenheath. I'm starting up a blog soon as well... there is so much to see and explore here! Its great!

MessageAs a military wife, I lived in Bury St. Edmunds in the late 1980's. It's so good to see that someone still sees in it the beauty I saw. When anyone asks, I tell them they have got to see her at least once in a lifetime. My daughter expatriated herself and moved back to England, lives in Plymouth, and gives us the excuse to go back. Next trip I intend to take my husband who has never been to Bury there for his first visit. I'm sure he'll love it as much as I did. Thank you for sharing.

MessageThis is what I love about the web.
Real life from places you could easily overlook.

The Long Blondes look like an interesting band.

Did you know that Nick Cave wrote the song "Gates to the garden" at the Angel hotel, staying in the room above the word Angel at the time ?
Check out the lyrics and you can even walk in his footsteps, should you want too.

MessageHi! I like your blog very much. I've been to Bury and there isn't a prettier town anywhere. Have you ever heard about a grand old house, not too far out of town, where there is a deep well-like hole in the garden (?) that was built with a coldfood storage chamber inside? I may have details garbled... I read about it in the last year.
It seems they would lower a servant boy down into the hole and I guess he'd load and unload from chamber in the side of the well. If you know anything about this, would you please email me? Thanks

MessageHere's a true story involving Bury St Edmunds for you Ruby.

Many years ago my young nephew from Birmingham was staying with me in Thetford and was very keen to go to the park.

"Yes we will after we've been to Bury St Edmunds" I assured him.

I overheard him 10 minutes later telling his mum in a broad Birmingham accent : "We're going to the park, but Uncle Rog says we've got to do some digging first".

MessageJames George Deck was born in Bury St. Edmonds, Suffolk on 1 November 1807. His father John, (born in 1761) was the Postmaster and Mayor of Bury. The family originally were Hugenots coming to England from France prior to the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. James was my great great grandfather. He emigrated to New zealand where I was born.
