MessageI am reading the book "Ship of Ghosts" by James Hornfischer, a wonderful tribute to the brave sailors and marines of the USS Houston. Is Captain Rooks' "Estimate of the Situation" available somewhere?

Thanks for the opportunity to explore more about the crew and the ship.

Best Regards,

Claude

MessageMy uncle went down with the Houston. His name was Sigmund "Ziggy" or "Ski" Ustaszewski. If anyone knew him, I'd love to hear from you. He was a wrestler and we just discovered some pictures of him wrestling in a ring on the ship. Does anyone know of anyone who may have been on the wrestling team. My uncle was a Pharmacist Mate on the Houston. Does anyone know of any of the other Pharmacist Mates that served on the Houston. Thank you! Mary Ann Schwab

MessageJust stumbled across this blog today after writing an e-mail to USS Houston survivor David Flynn. I'm asking if he might have met my grandfather, Dutch POW Han "Sammy" Samethini, on the Burma Railway.

It's possible that my grandfather met some Houston survivors in the Railway camps. Among the items in his POW scrapbook is the September 1984 issue of the Bluebonnet (USS Houston Survivors Association newsletter).

Keep up the good work!

MessageTo all of the survivors of the USS HOUSTON, God bless America! My father was a WW2 vet; and a Chief pharmacist mate. It was heart rendering to read about the sailor who saved the life of another sailor by putting a canvas bag that was wet on a sailor who had been burned in the explosion.
