| Message | Jerry is old and we do have trouble putting weight on her, though for an old dog, it is better not to strain the heart with excess weight. Brother is on the thin side. We don't want him to get a fat belly, as one leg is dislocated and the other recovering from a fracture and infection. He has been on antibiotics for a month, which gives him diarrhea, which makes it difficlut to put on weight. One problem we have recently eradicated is volunteers trying to fill the thinner dogs up with treats. This almost always gives them diarrhea, which means the day's meal was wasted. It also means they have to be fasted for a day and take diarrhea medicine for two days, with a gradual increase in food intake over the coming days. So, by trying to fatten the dogs up, several of our volunteers have in fact been making them thinner. It is far better to ask one of the staff here if you think a dog is thin. If you check the following website, you can get an idea of ideal weights for dogs: http://placervillevet.com/canine%20body%20condition.htm |

| Message | Hi, helper. First fo all, many thanks for coming to help out at our holding centre; this is very much appreciated by us and the dogs. Now, to address your comments about the thin dogs I would need to know which dogs you are talking about. Several of our dogs are on the thin side for varying reasons: Charly, the German shepherd, looks on the thin side because he has been shaved recently, but if you look at ideal weights for German shepherds, at 34.5 kg, Charly's weight is ideal. Sam and Mister are 'wiry' - that is, they are lean and muscular, probably as a result of being quite nervous dogs. Sam was fostered for several months and, try as he might, Sam's fosterer was unable to get Sam to put on any weight, In fact, he has put on some weight since returning to the holding centre. Ariel, the dog in the wheelchair, like Sugar, looks very boney around the bottom of her ribs. This is because she has muscle atrophy as a result of her accident. We try to put weight on her, but it all goes to her tummy, which makes it difficult for her to move around. Elvis and Jake, the two lmedium-sized thre-legged dogs, are pretty close to ideal weight, though people say they are thin. We prefer to keep them on the light side, as they only have one leg to bear the bulk of their weight (not so much a problem for dogs with a back leg missing). |
