Message(Tuesday 0925) Got another two X's in the book yesterday. The first one was CH11 where we did spins, review of some of the stuff I had learned so far and upgrades of a few things. It wasn't a particularly good flight, especially because I was slow at cross-checking my airspeed. At one point I configured the plane for landing and almost oversped the gear and flaps.
The second flight was a solo, CH11A. It was basically an hour of pattern work, this time including closed patterns too. Closed pattern is when you take off and go directly to downwind on the circuit. So after takeoff you get clearance for the closed and at the end of the runway you look behind and on top of you, and as long as you have 140kt, you start a 20 degree climb with 60 degrees of bank. Then, 300 feet before the circuit altitude you reduce the power to 20% torque and roll to about 90 degrees of bank in order to let the nose slice through the horizon and stabilize at the circuit altitude and speed. Then you do a quick circuit check, meaning that you check your fuel state, hydraulics and engine instruments, call downwind and check your spacing from the runway. Then you configure the aircraft for landing and do the final turn the same way as in an overhead break. All this happens in a matter of a few seconds so you're very busy indeed!
This morning I looked at the syllabus and I only need ten more X's to be done with the CH phase.
This afternoon I'll be flying IF5. Only one flight today...

Message(Friday 1040) It feels like ages since I last updated in here just because I skipped a day and because I've been busy. I had CH5S yesterday morning and afterwards I had CH10 flight. All went pretty well. This morning I had CH6S and I was supposed to do CH11 flight later on today but I opted to ground myself for the rest of the day because I'm simply too tired to fly.
Yesterday evening most of the Danish "colony" went to play paint ball at a course just outside Moose Jaw. We had alot of fun and got quite a few bruises out of it too...but that's all part of the game. Nothing better than shooting the crap out of an instructor. And when you're sure that you've hit him is when you shoot a few more rounds to be on the safe side, just in case he didn't feel them. It's all fun and games and it doesn't really matter who the opponent is. It just sucks really bad when you get hit especially from short distance or in the beginning of the game where the guns still have full pressure in their tanks.
Yesterday I also learned to do PFL (Practise forced landings) and closed patterns. Both are fun manouevrs. The PFL is inteded to get you back to base with a dead engine. It's quite effective and if you hold the parameters and do the calculations correctly, you're almost assured of landing safely, no matter how far from the base you are when the engine quits; as long as you have enough altitude of course.
LOD and I have to buy the Friday pizza for the flight today. Expensive to solo!

Message(Wednesday 2050) What a day! Shortly after I wrote there was an aircraft available so we went to do the rest of the solo check. Just before take off I realized that the hydraulic pressure was out of limits so the IP started taxiing back and called the mechanics on the radio. They said it was ok so we taxied back out and did the flight. All ok except that I only got an "Achieved" as I taxied too fast (stupid!). Anyway I went straight out for the third flight of the day, which was the solo flight. I started taxiing out and suddenly: "Bandit 802 hold position, read back!" followed shortly by "Bandit 802, your flight is cancelled, return to the parking position." Which God had I pissed off to deserve this? I could see rain coming closer to the pattern so I was suspecting it too close. Damn! So I waited for about an hour and the rain shower cleared and I went out for another attempt. This time all went well. The air was SO smooth out there and it's so much fun when you're on your own in the plane. I also find myself flying much more precisely when I'm alone for some reason. LOD was also doing his first solo and in the last half of the flight it was just him and me in the air. It was awesome. I did five overheadbreaks and two straight-ins for touch and gos.
Tomorrow morning I have CH5 sim at 0740, which means briefing at 0640. There's quite a bit of studying to be done so I better get finished. Then I have CH10 flight at 1230...

Message(Wednesday 1430) Just landed and debriefed solo check. All went well with a few minor errors. However we had a problem with the landing gear, when it was very slow to retract after a touch and go for some reason. So we had a DPCO which means "Duty Partially Carried Out" and we'd have to do the remainder of the flight tomorrow. I was hoping that we could do it today so that I could also solo today but there are no aircraft available. The only things we have to do on the review will be one straight in approach and one overhead break and then I'm good to go.
One of the other Danes also flew his solo check today and passed so he's good to go solo for 1630. That's it for now. The forecast for tomorrow looks even better than today and I have priority for the aircraft so the chances of flying are good. I'll keep you up to date.

Message(Wednesday 1015) I flew IF4 with an instructor I hadn't flown with before. It was a good flight overall with a few snick snacks here and there but nothing serious enough to down grade me.
Plan for today is solo check. I'm scheduled for 1230 so there's still a couple of hours to go. If all goes well, the solo flight is at 1645.
Now I think I want to chair fly some stuff and then grab some lunch before flight brief.

Message(Tuesday 1015) We just got an email from our boss saying that the helo slot won't be decided until September instead of 1st July as it was originally. In a way it's good but in a way it's bad. I don't know whether to be happy or not. The chances for me getting a jet slot were good and the more I fly, the more the chance of screwing up at one point or the other, but that also counts for the other guys of course...
The weather wasn't good this morning but now it's been changed to a Dual VFR programme which means that my flight will probably get changed from IF4 to CH9, which is the solo check. Going solo would of course require that the weather gets even better and the programme changes to a VFR solo.
In any case, I'm ready to go.

Message(Monday 0720) The weather is as expected - terrible. It's been raining since Friday evening now and it doesn't seem to want to change any time soon. This place surprizes me every time. Today the temperature won't get above 10C. At night it still goes down to about 0C most of the time.
Best case today is that I get an IF trip if there is no icing in those low-hanging clouds. Otherwise I don't think there's much of a chance that I'll fly the solo check unless something drastic happens with the weather. But as I mentioned earlier - you never know with the weather here...

Message(Sunday 0910) I got in the air last Friday and did the IF trip where we did the local departure, where you track the 104 degree Radial outbound and arc right at 9 DME to join and track the 195 Radial outbound into the area. From there we did a couple of point to points to holding entries and holding patterns and then it was time to setup for an approach. In this case we got vectors for a PAR, did a touch and go, flew the published missed approach procedure and got vectors for a VOR/DME approach. All went nicely and afterwards it was time to give the newest Bandit students their Bandit welcome party. It was all nice clean fun and they seem like a bunch of nice guys.
Tomorrow's my solo check according to the schedule but it all depends on the weather which doesn't look too promising. I'll keep updating as things happen.

Message(Friday 1250) I got ungrounded this morning and I'm already on the schedule for 1430 where I'll be flying IF3. I'm quite anxious and also a bit nervous to be honest. We'll probably fly the PAR (GCA) for the first time today among other things so I don't want to screw it up.
The weather isn't for CH flying and by the looks of it, it's going to be cloudy and rainy the next few days. I'll keep updating...
