MessageI served in L Troop 70-71 and I thought I'd pass along something I found the other day. If you are interested in seeing the Hersfeld and former Border area, download Google Earth which shows satellite photos of the world. Although there is a lot of growth, the Kasserne is still clearly visable as well as the entire region. You can even scroll to the former OP sites. It's a free download and truly worth looking at.

MessageFellow 1966 Troopers, I am looking for two items of the 14th Cav.

The first is photos of our First Sgt Jackman. I can still hear him shouting, “I WANT EVERY SWINING D--- TO LISTEN UP!” Or “LISTEN UP NUM NUTS!” And some others that I choose not repeat. smilie Even the 2nd Lts feared smilie him.

The next item is, EM Club recorded music from 1966. I have been in touch with the band members from 1966 “The Fugitives”. They have advised me that a GI use to go to the EM club in 1966 and record them on his reel to reel. Maybe you are that GI. Got tapes?

FYI; The EM Club was lost in a Fire smilie

MessagePaul McCammon-I arrived in Bad Hersfeld in May, 1960 and was assigned to 14 A/C 3rd Sqdron Hq Troop Commo as a Radio Teletype operator. Later I was also assigned the Driver of HQ 10-the Commo officers jeep. He was Lt Tipton (now a retired LTC) and I am convinced at that time I had the best job in the platoon. He was really great, treated me like I had some sense even when I didn't display it. After he was transferred to M troop as XO, his replacement whose name I won't mention, quickly made it the worst job in the platoon. The Berlin Wall was built during my stay and I got extended until February 1962. Since I was a draftee, I was not a happy trooper. However, looking back, I am grateful that at least I wasn't being shot at. The years have given me some perspective which makes me appreciate the time I spent in the Army:

1. Something happens to a man when he serves in the military. I can't describe it, but you can see the difference between those that have and those that did not (and some really needed to serve a hitch, it would help their attitude immensley).

2. I made more friends then than I ever had before or since.

3. There is pride in knowing I paid my dues.
