MessageI grew up listening to KROY and was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to do weekends on KROY from '77-'79. My first shift was as a fill in because the staff was having a Christmas party and Terry Nelson had to find someone in a hurry. I happened to have a tape of one of my shows at Cosumnes River College. It was bad but Terry was desperate. He told me I was on at noon so hurry and learn the board. Thanks to Tony Cox for showing me the ropes.

It was great being a part of the KROY history. When I first came to this site and heard the old KROY jingles it sent chills up my spine. Those were some great times and the memories will live forever.

MessageIn the 1950-51 era KROY broadcast two radio shows a week of the 724th AF Band from Mather Field CA. I played in that band and was wondering if any tapes of that era still exist?
Your recent article in the Bee sounded as if someone might still have something from the past.
If not--thanks for being there.

MessageIf I could freeze time it would be 1969. KROY was in it's Music Power heyday with Uncle John's Fun Club starting the day, Bob Sherwood from 10 to 3, Chuck Roy from 3 to 7, and Jack Hammar working the night.
There was no other station like KROY. Johnny Hyde was truly an innovator who dared to take chances. It worked. And you could tell all the DJ's were having fun. KROY radiated only 1000 watts of day power but living way out in Winters it was a strain to pull in 250 watts at night.
One classic moment in 1969 was the broadcast from the dump after the lines from the transmitter to the studio broke down. Chuck Roy saved the station that day.
I had a chance to meet several of the KROY personalities. I think Chuck thought I was weird. He was probably right. I once had hopes of a broadcast career and did interview at KROY several times. I learned from Bob Sherwood never to name drop. Jack Daniels said someone would be leaving soon and that he was interested. Turns out it was Daniels who left. It had always been suggested I sell. Well I did, but not in radio. I spent 20 years in hotel sales and management.
Today I am doing what I should have been doing all along, teaching. I am married, have one son, three black cats and am a long way from Sacramento, much less Winters, in Queen Creek, Arizona. KROY in '69 was the best of times!!

MessageWhen I was growing up in Sacramento in the 1960s and early 1970s I was more of a KXOA listener than a fan of KROY. But as my career in broadcasting evolved I realized I was much more influenced by KROY: the marketing, the production values, the format presentation, the KROY jocks and that wonderful KROY attitude! What an incredible station for 1000 watts/day, 250 watts/nighttime. There will never be another station like 1240 KROY.

MessageIs there any chance for another KROY reunion? Like the last broadcast in 1996.

How about selling old kroy radio recordings? which I would much rather listen to than music and dj's on today's stations.

MessageI just wanted to say thankyou to the KROY jocks, and staff. I grew up listening to KROY, and now that its gone I have sort of an empty sad feeling left over from it.

This is really a great site, is there a chance the this site may someday stream the old kroy tracks onto the net??? that would be really great!

Anyways...
thank you KROY, you bring back a lot of happy memories.

MessageHi everyone!
I'm still in radio, I'm back in Modesto with the Citadel Broadcasting cluster. Manager of ESPN Radio in Modesto & Stockton. and 103.9 The Hawk in Merced. I'm in daily contact with Ron Harrison at Pebble Beach... Quite often with Mike Hamiel... And have work at four radio companies with the Great Terry Nelson. Actually Terry and I were in boy scouts together. We've known each other for(now this is scary)...50 years!
I was at KROY when the daily competition was with KZAP and we were powered by Bobby Box. Fanny Ann's and the Firehouse were the nightly watering holes.(and I do mean nightly). Compared to today's corporate structure of radio, it now all seems like a fantasy.

MessageGreat site! It brought back copious amounts of memories. I grew up around the corner from the tower on KROY Way &used to ride my bike there. A bunch of us also had to go by the window on Arden Way and make faces at the jocks as part of a scavenger hunt. I am now a studio and stage guitarist in Nashville and can be found at: www.webspawner.com/users/michaelgregory
