| Message | If I could freeze time it would be 1969. KROY was in it's Music Power heyday with Uncle John's Fun Club starting the day, Bob Sherwood from 10 to 3, Chuck Roy from 3 to 7, and Jack Hammar working the night. There was no other station like KROY. Johnny Hyde was truly an innovator who dared to take chances. It worked. And you could tell all the DJ's were having fun. KROY radiated only 1000 watts of day power but living way out in Winters it was a strain to pull in 250 watts at night. One classic moment in 1969 was the broadcast from the dump after the lines from the transmitter to the studio broke down. Chuck Roy saved the station that day. I had a chance to meet several of the KROY personalities. I think Chuck thought I was weird. He was probably right. I once had hopes of a broadcast career and did interview at KROY several times. I learned from Bob Sherwood never to name drop. Jack Daniels said someone would be leaving soon and that he was interested. Turns out it was Daniels who left. It had always been suggested I sell. Well I did, but not in radio. I spent 20 years in hotel sales and management. Today I am doing what I should have been doing all along, teaching. I am married, have one son, three black cats and am a long way from Sacramento, much less Winters, in Queen Creek, Arizona. KROY in '69 was the best of times!! |
