Messagesmilie Think 52 in Boston is wrong. In 51 we were in dry dock in Boston shipyard for repairs. When leaving
we caught the tail end of a hurricane and our captain, whom we lovingly called "Dark Eyes",
lost his grip and was propelled across the bridge where he struck his fore-head. As a consequence
he was confined to his bunk for a few days and his
exec. whom we called "Smiley" took command. I transferred off the ship in December of 51 and doubt the ship went back to dry dock again in 52..

MessageWhen I came to Naples to go onboard the Tallyho she just pulled out fo Suda Bay so I had to jump onborad an airplane and head there. As we flew over her the pilot took us down for a closer look then when she pulled onto the beach I helped tie her up & had a good time onboard. I rember the first time I drank oosu I spent two hours over the side calling Ralph. I enjoyed my tour & remember when the Scorpion went down after the storm & got her mainseam cracked. smilie

MessageThank you to all the sailors who were aboard the LST-1154. My father enjoyed his 20+ years in the Navy as a DI., signal man, and quatermaster. To honor him and so many more sailors, I just visited the LST-325 while it was in Nashville. It brought back many memories of dad's sea stories!!! Fair winds and good sailing!!

MessageThe liberty when we got any since we never went cold iron and were in port and starboard liberty, was fantastic. Ports were neat, and Naples was a terribly interesting place to live and start a family. I loved the ti9me I was able to spend on board.

MessageWe used to sail from Naples to Souda Bay and at one time we stopped at Pireus port where I was in a bar and I sitted at the back so I could see the front door, to my surprise the Greeks in front of me started fighting and I could not get out, the Greek police came over and the Greeks pointed the finger at me, so I was taken to the local jail, where I kept on saying American Embassy, finally an officer of the Embassy came over and bail me out and I went to my ship after 2 am where the ship was waiting for me so we could get underway to count Russina ships. That incident is still clear in my mind and I thank the crew for their support.

MessageThanks for creating and maintaining this site folks! Aside from all the travels and great adventures, I'm most reminded of the sorta "casual" atmosphere aboard ship whenever we were docked in Naples... like for example being on the watch one Xmas eve when the CO (I won't mention any names) returned with a couple Italian hookers under his arm. And naturally we just saluted him aboard and acted like nuthin' was unusual! Dunno when they finally left, but it sure wasn't on my watch (LOL)! smilie
