| Message | Jeff and I came to DC in August of '78. He caught a job at then Anchor Marine where he had worked summers while living with his grandparents. What was I to do?? Well, I cleaned rooms and picked apples before landing a job at Al's in November. What a world!!! Of course it was intimidating, trying to learn the job, and quickly, please the customers and cooks too--the later was impossible. I remember the time Al had some sort of scheduling malady and one off season night I was the only one in the dining room. Waitress, busser, hostess and cashier all rolled into one. Of course it got busy, well, busy for winter. At one point I had 19 tables at various stages of service. God bless Hamster, he didn't miss a thing. Al revised the schedule. Then there was the time the cook did not show up for 6:00 opening. Just the early waitress (me again). I had sense enough to turn on those grills and get out the pancake batter. You know I was on the phone tracking down who was scheduled and who was working for whom. Any OTHER morning it would have been no big deal as just the 6:00 coffee guys were true to their name--just coffee, but not this morning and there I was pouring coffee, seating customers, taking orders AND cooking them until 6:45. Thanks Ingert for teaching me to tie my apron strings into a straight, horizontal bow behind my back. I know my being left handed had to be trying!!! Thank you Al and Ingert for the job, the support, and the totally unique experience. |
