MessageIt was so good to see Al in these pictures. It has been so many years since I last saw him.
My grandfather and grandmother lived in Sister Bay for many years, and if I remember correctly, Al was a pallbearer at grandpas funeral. My father, Wally Carlson, passed away in 1988, and I am now living in north Idaho, so I don't know if I will ever get the chance to come to Sister Bay again, but hopefully I will be able to show my wife how beautiful it is there. I remember the old building before the log one now. I remember fishing on Kelstroms dock for perch. I miss perch and smoked chubs. I hope Al gets to see this message, as I would love to say thank you for all the memories I have of Sister Bay, my grandparents, and Al Johnson.
Sincerely,
Tom Carlson

MessageWorking at Al's provided me with so many great friends and experiences. It helped keep some balance during those years of my life where I could have easily gotten into trouble. I started working there in 1978 and continued on and off until my first son was born in 2000. I worked in many different job positions including the Butik, waitressing, salad bar, hostessing and a bit of management.

While working in the dining room, I learned to have a greater awareness... There was a regular counter customer, named Floyd, who would balance a dime on it's side and I was forever knocking it down each time I poured his coffee. I also remember Sam Subin bringing his mother in nightly. Her sight was failing so she would wear a mining light on her forehead while she ate... One of my favorite Butik memories was when Arlene Gustafson came to work hysterical because her new Bavarian uniform had been drying on her clothes line and she had accidently mowed it to shreds with her lawn mower!

I have many, many fond memories and learning experiences I shall forever cherish. Thank you Al and Ingert!

MessageOooooh the memories! Some will be best left unrevealed as Lars said "careful what you write!"
It was tremendous to see many of the Al gang while camping last week. I think that was the first time I ate the pancakes and actually enjoyed them after smelling, schlepping, scrapping and standing in wait for them for many many summers. (1988-1993)
Best memories are the taste of hot coffee extremely early in the morning waiting for the onslaught of hungry tourists. Laughing hysterically with everyone. Turkey sandwiches very very late at night. Challenging Cathy to a memory contest to see who could get the largest number of orders right w/o writing anything down. Much to Kirk's chagrin as we would try to sneak a pancake order in at the end and he would bellow "start over!!". I think she won, I could never remember what salad dressings everyone got.
Worst memory would have to be the bow!!(Katie) It was always conveniently lost or forgotten and I would be made to purchase a new one that never did get worn. Sorry Bryn. Finally I had my hair chopped just to skirt the dreaded black bow. (Rachel)
Thank you to the whole Johnson Family for all your amazing graciousness and love, especially you Annika for putting up with a whole lotta #*@!. Working at Al's was the hardest, most rewarding, fun job I have ever had--next to raising my kids. It was a tough decision to stay down here in Chitown but a good friend once said "you're a city girl" and so I am.

MessageDid I miss anything? Just like Bruce yelled outside the bathroom each morning at Lars house - "You´re too slow!" This was the lucky summer of 1990. Claes and I had a fabulous time - a bright memory for a lifetime! - partying, relaxing, golfing and once in a while working, me as a busboy and Claes in the kitchen heat, throwing forks and knifes in the bin since it became really swamped at the dishwasher a little bit too often. (Not like when Rex was there).
Perhaps we didn´t leave that many marks when we left, hopefully one or two girls remember us :-) if not, you probably should know that we established at least two essential things in Sister Bay;

1. The first branch of the labour union at Al´s
2. A freshly new wodka named ABSOLUT

Salute! Hope to bring the next generation busboys from the Fundin family soon, which would give me another reason coming over visiting all my old buddies, since I missed this opportunity.../Niclas

MessageBest of Times...Al taking the kitchen crew to the Packer's Games. Staying at the Downtowner Motel and staying up all night...met the CBS broadcasters playing cards and eating Pizza.

Worst moment...is there any doubt..dropping all those eggs on the old woden mats and then taking them across the street and washing them in the lake.
THANKS TO Al and Ingert...you put a lot of kids thru college!!!

MessageWorked at the restaurant my entire adolescenct
years. How shall I word this! "an adventurous time of my life"! So many memories, but working all those Christmas Eves [sorry Al & Ingert, when you were on your cruises], Daubo's glogg was flowing. It was the slow brew as I recall that made it just right. Winki was there too, to make sure the recipe was just right. Waiting for the clock to turn to 4:00 p.m. for Daubo to give the O.K.to lock the doors after the last customer was out and MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL. Good people and good times. Hello to All, Pam
Tack sa mycket, Jag hoppas vi ses igen. P.S. I did learn something from Swedish Camp. Gratulerar!

MessageI worked at Al Johnson's during my high school years from 69-72 and at certain times from 72-74. They were fun times although I cringe now at some of the stuff I did. Yes, when we were running low on roast beef, it was possible to make the round-trip meat run to Brussels, in tourist traffic, in an hour and a half (using Al's car)! It was good experience for future driving in Illinois.

I just want to say thanks, Al, for your great example of hospitality and the way you enjoy people and care about people. It has inspired me in my life. Thanks, Ingert, for letting me help landscape around the restaurant (even after I got the truck stuck in the Bailey's Harbor swamp digging up cedars for screening the parking lot). Now I design and sell landscaping for a living. Thanks Lars, Annika and Rolf for being such great friends of my family through the years. Dad sure loved his times with each each one of you. You have been so good to Mom as well. Thanks to all!

MessageReading these comments brings back memories. Seems like only yesterday Al asked "who made the coffee?" and of course none of us ever did!!
Looking forward to seeing everyone. Thanks Mariah for organizing this!
