MessageEnlisted in May 1954 and attended Boot Camp at Great Lakes.
Assigned to Class Radio School in San Diego and completed schooling in 1955.
Transferred to the USS ST Paul CA-73 and spent approximately 6 months cruising the South China Sea. The ST Paul became the flagship of Com 7th Fleet with additional communication duties. Returned to Long Beach and was fortunate enough to obtain duty with COMCRUDESPAC in the San Diego Harbor. The Flag alternated between the three Destroyer Tenders, USS Dixie, USS Prairie and the USS Piedmont. My 1st class rating came through and being undecided extended my enlistment for 1 year and continued my duty with the flag until my 5 years 0f duty came to and end in May of 1959.
My Ham Radio License was obtained about 30 years after leaving the service and the Code was still embedded in my memory.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone, who dates to the time and places noted above.

MessageDoug,
You did a great job on this site and I hate to see it go. You still got problems flying and have to have some old Master Chief find you when you jump off an airplane...
Rest of you...I am fishing and working with kids in baseball. I have not had a drink or an ugly girl in 15 years so I guess things are okay. I out lived my pecker as Willie Nelson sez. RMCM/CWO Joe Knott Chesapeake VA

MessageI went to RM "A" school at NTC San Diego in 1962.Got orders to Midway Island and spent a year there at the receiver site. Made 3rd class and then got orders to Commander Carrier Division One based out of North Ialand, San Diego. Two star admiral and we moved between San Diego and Westpac and I served on 5 different carriers with the admiral's staff. It was great duty and the most memorable moments are from when I was chosen as one of two operators of the Fleet Flash Net while on Yankee Station. This was during the Vietnam conflict, so things were hot and heavy with constant Flash TS traffic. I got out in Jnne of 1966 and wished I had stayed in. I was an RM2 when I got out.
