MessageAlthough it's wonderful to hear all the stories , and I am a history buff and think Henry River is beautiful, we must remember that the mill employed children in the early days, before the law was enacted to protect them. They worked from six in the morning to six in the evening without overtime pay or any benefits. They earned buttons which could be spent like money at the company store, which made the owners very wealthy. I am for the preservation of this historial site and so glad it has not been destroyed.

MessageHello smilie I am writing in regards to your site.... for some reason, it won't load on my computer. Why exactly, I'm not sure...maybe it's the computer I'm on. Anyhoo, I'm glad there are folks out there who remember this place, nestled just outsite Hildebran. I was wondering if anyone out there was still interested in fixing the place up, or what? I note they are (or were) dredging sand out of the river, so SOMEONE frequents the place.

Thanks

MessageThis site is absolutely wonderful! As a child, I remember every weekend passing through the village to cross the bridge and go to my grandmother, Collie Dowell's home. These weekend trips continued until about 1995 when my grandmother started getting sick. I always found it fascinating. Being the history buff that I am, I would love nothing more than to see this part of my childhood and much of my adult life become a National Historic Site. Those who lived and worked there and help make Burke County what it is should be remembered. Thank you for this sight. The pics of Ollie Dowell were mesmerizing. He was related to my mother, who was part of the Lynns who worked at the mill. Thanks again.

MessageHello ... my name is Hannah Doyle, and I'm a senior at UNC Asheville. I have visited Henry River Mill Village before because my boyfriend is from Burke County, and I was fascinated and wanted to know more (this was last year). I read what I could on the Internet, but as a journalist, it's hard to leave it at that.

I am taking a magazine writing class at UNCA right now and am highly interested in profiling Henry River as for a history article. I have spoken to the Web site manager and to his aunt, but would like to find more sources. I thought this might be a good place to find people who know a lot about Henry River, or lived there before (or know people who have), or just might know any possible sources and their contact information.

I would like to get in touch with several different people: the current owner/overseer, past residents (probably most important part), any neighbors or people who would know a lot about it, and anyone else of importance. If you have contact information for any of these people, I would really appreciate it.

This article is due Dec. 2, which isn't a lot of time, but I plan to have a basic article by this date, which I would expand upon over winter break. If anyone is interested in being interviewed, I would be happy to drive to Hickory to do so; or if you know anyone I could interview, please contact me. My phone number is (252) 256-3154 and my e-mail address is [email protected]. Any help is much appreciated! Thank you.

MessageOllie is my great great uncle. I have lived in Florida all my life, but have family in Hickory N.C. my mother Cynthia Dowell was born there, to Peggy, and Clay Dowell. I have heard the stories all my life, evertime we are there to see family, we drive threw Henry River, and her the storie, of the house's. The house by the store,I believe my great grandmother lived there, but anyways, it is not a trip to N.C if we do not go to Henry River. Thank you for all your hard work on this site. It will be great to show my son and tell him the stories that I was told as a kid and as a adult, when he gets older to understand and see this site.. Thank you again!!!! smilie
