| Message | 84 Charing Cross Road is near the Palace Theatre, which is at the crossing of Charing Cross and Shaftesbury Avenue. In 1981, when I first passed that way, the shop was a record store owned by a couple of young guys who claimed to have moved in with no knowledge of Marks & Co or Helen Hanff. However, tourists asking after Marks & Co inspired them to lay in a supply of Ms Hanff's book, which they displayed beside the cash register. They also scrubbed up the old Marks & Co sign stored in the basement and mounted it along the stairs to the second floor for all to see. Since 1981, the space has housed a variety of tenants, of which I remember a restaurant. A kitchen outfitter may be there now. |

| Message | I just came across your site this evening after watching the movie 84 Charing Cross Road, yet again. It's one of my favourites and I look forward to buying it instead of renting it over and over. I was reminded of this lovely story when reading the book "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society", a delightful read which also is told through letters. They both have the common thread of love of books and reading, made real through memorable characters. Thanks for the interesting website! I did visit Charing Cross Road in 1996 and look forward to returning someday soon. |

| Message | I remember reading a condensed version of the book when I was a teenager visiting my grandmother. The story has stayed with me for the rest of my life. Somehow, I missed knowing that there was a movie until recently. I just watched it on DVD, and it's every bit as wonderful as my memories of reading the book. The book has had an influence both on my interest in antiquarian books and in the way I approach my long-distance email correspondence. I had no idea that other people also felt this way about the story. |

| Message | 84 Charing Cross Road has been one of my favorite movies since I saw it at our local theater soon after it's release. It's one of the first movies I bought on VHS when we got a VCR and one of the first I bought on DVD when we made the transition from VHS so I am thankful that I can watch it whenever I want now. I had heard about the wonderful book shops on Charing Cross from a British pen pal. We started writing letters to each other in junior high school in the early 1960's just after the Beatles came to the US. She visited the shops on Saturdays with her parents and grandparents and visiting relatives from outside London on a semi-regular basis and gave me a heads up on the book becoming a movie when parts of it were being filmed in Britain. That was long before the days of the internet so I went to the library to check out the book and do research on Helene Hanff. It's such an enchanting story of how lives can become interwined and how people become connected and stay connected over the years without the use of a computer. Since Helene Hanff's passing, I have often wondered what happened to her book collection. There is a scene near the end of the film that shows her lovingly cleaning her book collection soon after she learns of Frank's death. There's no doubt that her book collection (and especially the books she bought from Marks & CO) were her prized possesions. I hope her family kept the collection together in her memory. Does anyone know ? |
