MessageI have a story to tell.
About 1990 I was ill in hospital for a few weeks. I was in my early 20's and shared a room with an elderly Gent (70's)As we where the longest serving 'inmates' in our 4 bed room we struck up a friendship. Being a 'young man' I had several visitors daily sadly he did not, only for a few on the weekend. I had the TV connected while the gent preferred to read and listen to his radio.

One night while flicking through the channels I passed the film 84 Charing Cross Road.
He asked to stop and watch it. I asked what it was about his brief explanation left me a little wary of its ability to hold my interest without a gun being fired or a drop of blood spilt.
I was mesmerised and loved it.

2 days later the gent was moved to another ward as he had become more unwell. I readied to go home and asked how he was, to be told he had passed away. I was numb. Sadly I can't remember his name anymore nor see his face, but the moment we shared watching this film has stuck with me clear as a bell. I have children and a family now and my eldest loves it (12 yrs)
Thanks
Thomas

MessageJust finished the book and out of curiosity tried this website as mentioned in the notes added by the translator (I guess). And your website presents vividly the whole place and all the people. Next time when I'm in London, this is a must-see. BTW, I love the story of Daphne and how the family got to know the book later. She was so lovely and also the one whose life experiences behind the book I was most curious about anyway. Another book could have begun.

MessageThis is high on my list of favorites, and it has been all too long since I have seen it. I have been waiting for the DVD. And, to my delight, the wait ended this afternoon. Now, it's a special pleasure to find a website devoted to "Charing Cross." I'll spend some time reading others' thoughts, in preparation for viewing this evening.

MessageThis book "found" me when I was about 13 in Denver. As a child who moved constantly with no friends save books, and a passion for older, more forgotten writings, it made a huge memory for me. Needless to say, I lost the book not long after I read it in one of our moves. Today, at a local thrift store in southern Iowa, it found me again. I just finished it with tears in my eyes. Once again I remember why I so passionatly love books.
