| Message | Hi Jo, Here is a continuation of my washboard story. The guys on the Windy City Jammers have been helping me along continuously (ranging from advice and giving me cds to practice from). Another great thing happened to me this spring. I got further acquainted with a man who sits in the crowd. His name is Bob and he use to play the trumpet professionally (he did tours in Europe and USA). One night we got to talking about drums and I learned that he knows about drums. From there he started giving me free lessons. At present I am practicing the hand and foot coordination from two drum lesson books that Bob provides me. He informed me that I have been using the 16th notes and other complex beats without knowing it. He also told me that he wants me to know what I'm doing by sight (reading rhythym notes). I told him that I have been doing everything on instinct and in so many words he informed me that I have good instincts. As I have said I have a lot to learn, but I am enjoying every moment of it. | Message | Hi Jo, I read your biography and I see some similarities between us. Many years ago I played the washboard on a rhythym band called the Paradise Jammers and I was playing it wrong. Eleven years passed and I didn't think about playing a washboard again. It was March of 2007 and I was at the Midwest High Speed Rail Association (a passenger rail support group) Spring Conference and I was looking for a table to sit at. It took me awhile to find an available table and I wound up sitting with an elderly man. We started talking and I found out that his name is John Pitt. We were having lunch and the piano player was playing the song Night Train and I told John that I knew the song. John was impressed that a man in his 30s would know that song and at that point he invited me to watch him play the trumpet and banjo for the Windy City Jammers on a Monday night at the Lincoln Restaurant. I started out attending from the crowd. A few weeks passed and Banjo Player Jimmy Paktor asked if I played any instruments and I informed him that I play the washboard and jaw harp. It was Monday 5-21-07 and I bought an antique washboard in a Chicago suburb and played it later that day. Around a month or two later band leader Ernie Michaels told me that I was playing it wrong. That same night Bass Player Jack Condon taught me the basic 1-2-3-4 beat. Time went on and Digital horn player Ed Chester told me that the basic 1-2-3-4 beat sounded monotonous and I continuously built on it from there. |
