MessageDear Peter
Just having fun looking at your blog, its exactly like you, full of surprises and intense... Boy, I have been, I am and will be always amazed by you and pls. never stop to surprise me.

Our friendship started a a drink in Cote d`Ivoire December 1995 where we were both joining the UN. The road has been extraordinary since then, bumpy but how fantastic wouldn`t you reckon?

Then you kept me company while I was "stuck" (but loved every minute of it) in Ngara, Tanzania. You were the only person on earth who radioed me to keep my spirits high. In these days, you brighten up my "long evenings" alone with no electricity and not many friends... Yet, I never really felt lonely... somehow...

Your old friend from the bush,
MF

[Peter says: Hey MF! Still remember those days.. Friendship never fades...:-) ]

MessageHi Peter ---

I just read "On Earth as it is in Heaven." I remember it so well; our group standing there on the ice in awe, totally alone, totally isolated, and in those moments experiencing something we can only begin to describe to others.

We have not seen each other in many years. I pray that our paths will cross again.

Ralph

[Peter says: Hey Ralph! Of course our paths will meet again! And hopefully it will be on a remote spot again... As remote as Peter I island :-) ]

MessageOnly last week I was refused entry into the USA after several visits. I refused to disclose the private details and names of the friends I was visiting. I understand that there is a need to protect every nations security but I also believe that every person has a right to travel freely around the world. I am an everyday person with a belief that everybody has a fundamental right to privacy. I was told that my friends would be contacted to verify my reasons for visiting the USA and find this absurd. I was honest, I could have said I was a tourist and there would be nothing to check. Because I was honest, I was subjected to the most intimidating and degrading interview of my entire life. I love the American way and I love American citizens so much. What I will say is that the Homeland Security Officer who interviewed me was nothing short of insulting and small minded. He was lacking in intelligence and has done nothing to promote the country of which he should be so proud to be a citizen. I will visit the USA again because I belive in my rights but the US must take huge steps to ensure that their allies are given a right of free passage in and out of their country and the immigration officials are correctly trained in the art of human kindness. I am an honest law abiding citizen of the UK running my own business and working hard for what I have. The questioning that I was subjected to was inappropriate and uneccesary ! One day the shoe will be on the other foot !

[Peter says: Hey Gerald! Thanks for your message. Sorry to hear about your trouble. I think more people should, like you, refuse to give private details. There is a line to be drawn between security and privacy. I do not think that line is in the right place, in the US.]

MessageWonderful but sad story. Job Description for US Immigration Officers: No brains or initiative need. No discretion allowed. Just follow orders and you will be rewarded with a banana. Career progress is based on the number of banana's collected.

[Peter says: Hey Peter! Good to see you here... Keep safe in Afghanistan! :-) ]

MessageHi Peter, very inspiring your "sabbaticals" and apparently dramatic changes in your "career" life, no big changes in your way of life though.
Just one tip for a world citizen, don't miss Peruvian food in this life!
cheers
Ernesto

[Peter says: Hi Ernesto! Long time no hear.... Yep, I should not forget Peru or South America for the matter! Have not had the privilege to visit much there.. Only the Falklands and two days of Chile!.. One day!!! Thanks for dropping by!]
