MessageMy dad served on the USS Marblehead RM2 Class, and was there Feb 4, 1942. I wonder if anybody knows where I can find The names of all the crewmen, the ships roster! Had it at one time on the Marby web site, but that does not seem to work anymore. My dad passed away in 1978. would appreciate any information anyone could give me, I've looked everywhere..

MessageGreat website.
Lt. James M. Drury was the Damage Control Officer on the Marblehead when she was hit. He received the Navy Cross for his role in helping save the ship and bring her home to be repaired.
By November 1944 he was Captain Drury and was given command of the USS Neshoba - APA 216 on which my Dad served.
I maintain the Neshoba website and have been in contact with over 40 of the crew. Not one has had a negative thing to say about Capt. Drury. He was respected and liked by his crew. If anyone is interested, the site is at rpadden.com and is part of a larger Amphibs website.
Thank you for your hard work on this site - it was pointed out to me by one of the Neshoba's crew.

MessageMy great-uncle, Gordon E. Kriner, served on the USS Marblehead in WWII. I came across your web site when I was searching for information on the Marblehead.

My uncle will be 87 in March, 2008. I think it's wonderful you have a web site dedicated to the ship and the men who served on her. Now, if I can only get my uncle to look at a computer to see how wonderful your site is! (It was probably easier getting him on board the ship.)

Best regards to all the veterans!

MessageI am married to Joseph Leinweber Jr, his father being the Joseph R Leinweber that served on the Marblehead and is mentioned in the story. I'm proud to say that Dad is still with us. He lives with us in TN. He turned 88 on Nov 14, 2007. His injuries still haunt him and cause him pain, but he is a joy to have around. Please feel free to contact us.

Dad received minimal disability rating for his injuries from the Navy, and his appeal the the VA has stagnated due to lack of records after a fire in a Navy warehouse years ago. This Navy Magazine article tells of some of his injuries, but not all.

Sadly He has become one of the many forgotten Military members from WWII and the VA appears to be waiting for him to die, rather than honoring him and his service injuries.

Please we must never forget and ignore our old veterans, and we must never use a new war for an excuse to do right by them.

MessageMy father was Charles Richard Cluck Gunnersmate 1st class on the USS Marblehead. While he saw many injured and dead on the Marlbehead He did Not suffer a "scratch" My cousin told me that his mother(my grandmother) was told that he was dead and the ship was lost. She refused to belive it.
saying that she would Know if he was dead. It was six months before she heard he was alive. The ship was nearly tore in Two and was only able to steer with the engines. The Japs had left them to sink but did not know of their determination to remain and fight again and to save their ship. The US naval has photos and the book "where Away" to tell the story of the jorney.
