MessageHi Craig. I just found the website again and it is wonderful. I have had the pleasure of corresponding with the granddaughter of Dr. Wassell.

My uncle Bill Corbitt, one of the six brothers who served in WW II at the same time, passed away on June 13, 2008. The last of an era for our family.

Thank you for the fine work you have done with this site to help us all to remember or know about the Marblehead.

Messagesmilie My grandfather Robert J. Groesbeck served on the USS Marblehead. He is still alive and lives in Sun City West, Arizona. My mother gave me an old copy of the book "Where Away". I was simply interested in the story of the Marblehead and found this web site. My grandfather also served aboard the USS Intrepid and the USS Indianappolis. He turns 90 years old this year. He never talks about his stay aboard the Marblehead, but I'm sure that he has many fond memories of his fellow shipmates.

MessageI just buried my uncle Dominic Rossi who, like others didn't talk much about his experiences from Feb 1942. But as i'm told he was a gunners mate and was either knocked off the Marblehead or jumped off to help rescue others in he water. In any case they were adrift for 9 days till rescued while some were taken by sharks till the dolphins showed up to protect them. Like another story i've read he was mia and feared dead when he just showed up at home one day in Chicago 6 months later. The Navy provided a fitting service with three of the Navys' best performing a moving flag presentation accompained by taps played nearby. Like others I too could not find his name listed in any website record. I have respectfully enjoyed reading many shared stories here and i'm glad i shared mine here also. Keep his widow in your prayers and thank you!
