| Message | Thanx for your work on the MARBLEHEAD site. Here are some notes to add: 1. Petty officers Auxiel, Bell, Buchanan, Chariton (spelled: Charlton), Clark, Ham, and Joyner show up as MARBLEHEAD men on the deck log of USS MOUNT VERNON (AP 22), sailed Fremantle 6 March 1942 for San Francisco. She took home 79 officers and 323 enlisted men of the Asiatic Feet, including these seven from MARBELHEAD. 2. LT Eddie Blessman was the ship's senior naval aviator. Does anyone have any info on the radiomen who flew in the ships floatplanes? Any photos of one of the ship's Curtiss SOC Seagull floatplanes from this 1940-early 42 period? |

| Message | My Grandfather was Fred Engelhardt who served on the USS Marblehead beginning in 1940. Sadly poppop is no longer here with us. During his lifetime he never spoke to the children about his time served in the US Navy. I would like to learn more about some of his experiences, if any one has info on him I would love to learn about them. Thank you. |

| Message | I just saw the post from 06.17.09 from John and Bob Schmit concerning the Bronze Star Medal. The medal is ranked 10th in current standing for awards for heroism, outstanding achievement or meritorious service. A bronze letter "V" for valor is authroized by all branches of the military. It was first instituted in 1944 but was awarded retroactively to December 7, 1941. If your Dad has a "V" device authorized that is no small achievement. I would encourage you to learn as much as you can about your Dad's service. Good luck. |

| Message | I found this site by accident. I first heard of Dr. Wassell when I caught the movie on TV when I was a kid back in the '60's. Even though Hollywood had it's impact the overall story in the movie spoke of courage, grit and determination and has always been a source of motivation to me. I always have been and always will be a fan of Gary Cooper. I'm also a fan or buff on history, especially World War II. I've read quite a bit about the battles of the Java Sea, Sunda Strait, Balikpapan and Badung Strait. Seeing this site with men who were involved in those battles is just amazing. To the families and of these brave men, I hope you gather their histories so their sacrifices will not be lost after they die. We need to save that history. Congratulations on creating and maintaining this site. I wish the movie would come out on DVD. It might help in getting people to become aware of the history and courage involved. God bless them all! |

| Message | While researching my husband's family tree I found his family traced back to Kidderminster, England. It looks like we might have been related to Dr. Wassell. I saw the movie and he was a great man, Having read his biography I am even more impressed and will be doing more research into his history. |
