Although up to now little news has been released there is alot going on behind the scenes with Gayle Mill; Gayle Mill Trust who will be responsible for running the Mill are imminently about to sign the Lease with the North of England Civic Trust. Work has been completed on the weir and the leat and water ran once more down the leat recently and turned the Williamson turbine, the oldest one of its kind in the world. This turbine is now fully commissioned and with the water power from Gayle beck has turned the Victorian line shafts workings in the mill. The other two turbines in the mill are almost at the point of being commissioned. The biomass boiler has also been commissioned and is ready to provide renewable heating power for the mill. Inside the mill work is ongoing to restore the Victorian machinery. Once the lease is signed and machinery fully restored it is envisaged that the Mill will be open to the public by next Easter 2008.
If you are not already, please become a member of Friends of Gayle Mill, for a small fee of £10 we keep members updated with an annual magazine and periodic newsletters and also social functions. Have been fascinated by Gayle Mill since seeing it on Restoration & watched it's progress with interest. Slightly disappointed that it is not open yet but visited it about 4 weeks ago. I long to walk down to the actual building and be nosey but of course I can't. It seems to be progressing slowly but understand this is due to funding etc. Saw the Mill when it was snowing in January and could just imagine people going there to work all those years ago - imagined also how hard life would be for them- the women with shawls pulled tightly around them from the cold and the men in flat caps and boots. How I long for it to open.

I came across Gayle Mill today on our way to the Wensleydale Creamery. On returning to the mill I was dissappointed to see that there is no public access, only a sign saying BBC Restoration. Having read the information sheets by the roadside, I was left wondering what is happenig in the restoetion project and when will the Mill be open to visitors? As a civil engineer specialising in bridges but educated in turbines an other mechanical engineering I found the whole project fascinating, I can see Gayle Mill attracting more visitors than the Creamery down the road! There doesn´t seem to be much on the website to give up to the minute information .
Please do something.

Dear Friends of the Gayle Mill,
in 1995 I passed Gayle on my way back home to Germany from Scotland and was fascinated by Yorkshire. Just by chance, I discovered the beautiful old derelict Gayle mill and took a few photographs. When my wife and myself returned several years later, we were delighted to realise, that unlike many other industrial relicts the mill has not been left to fall to pieces, but has been carefully restored. Thanks a lot for your efforts!
Greetings
