MessageRichie Allen is one of the greatest hitters ever to grace the baseball world! Misunderstood, maligned (unfairly), Richie Allen was/is a sensitive, intelligent person who happened to be an incredible presence at the plate. I saw many of the greats --- Mays, Aaron, Stargell, McCovey, etc.--- and none of them had the intimidating plate presence of Richie Allen. He was total class!
When the Dodgers traded him (I was a Dodger fan at the time), I was angry and heartbroken. Because he was not Hollywood and had a mind of his own, he didn't fit in in Los Angeles.
Barry Bonds, another of my favorites, is much like Richie --- controversial, misunderstood, and a class act.
God bless you, Richie Allen, for all that you brought to baseball. Some of us truely loved you, both as a person, and a player.

God Bless,
Jack

MessageGood job! One of my favorite players and Phillies. Saw my first Phillies game in 1964, when I was 7. Allen, Callison, Rojas, and Taylor were my favorites from the 1960s. Thanks.

MessageWhile I do think that Dick should get tremendous consideration for the Hall, there are other players more deserving. Ted Simmons has more hits than Berra or Fisk. His stats meet or exceed every catcher in the Hall. The fact that he is continually overlooked is sad.

Have a great day!!

MessageFantastic. Richie is my all time favorite player.

Great stuff. Do you sell any of his early Phils photos?

There is one photo I have been looking for--probably from the Bulletin --Richie in sort of dusk at third base. Very compeling photo.

MessageIf I didn't know who Dick Allen was, I would still not vote him in the HOF with the numbers he has. It's a no brainer.

MessageMr. Dick Allen: I just finished the book 'September Swoon'. I was the wife of an amazing Leftie, in the 1960's. I loved every minute of being involved with baseball and learned so much. THE MOST AMAZING; A VERY GOOD FRIEND OF OURS WAS CALLED UP TO PHILLIE IN THE 60's. GENE STONE, 1ST BASE. YOU WERE STILL THE MAN OF THE HOUR, BUT WHEN GENE ARRIVED, YOU SAID
'STONEY WANT TO PLAY 1ST TONIGHT?" GENE WAS IN HEAVEN, AND YOU MADE IT HAPPEN. MY HUSBAND WAS IN THE MINORS WITH RON, AND BEING FROM CALIFRONIA WE REALLY WERE CLUELESS HOW AWFUL THE RACIAL ASPECT WAS. RON AND GORDY DECIDED TO GO TO THE MOVIES, AND MY HUSBAND SAW THE DESPICABLE SIGNS - BLACK ENTER HERE AND WHITES HERE. EVENTHOUGH MY HUSBAND WAS A PITCHER HE WAS QUITE SHORT 5'9". HE HAD A QUICK TEMPER, ESPECIALLY FOR THIS INJUSTICE. OBVIOUSLY RON, JUST DIDN'T WANT TO MAKE A SCENE. GORDON WAS HAVING NONE OF THAT 'THIS GENTLEMAN WILL ENTER THE THEATRE THE SAME WAY I AM', THUS ALL H--- BROKE LOOSE. GORDON HATED THE ABUSE PEOPLE OF COLOR WERE GOING THROUGH. RON TOLD MY HUSBAND WHERE I SHOULD NOT GO AS I WAS DRIVING FROM CALIFORNIA TO
SPARTANBURG. MARTIN LUTHER KING HAD BEEN ASSASINATED. I WILL ALWAYS ADMIRE YOU, AND BE ETERNALLY THANKFUL TO RON.
GORDON WAS GOING TO BE CALLED UP TO THE 'SHOW', AS GRANT JACKSON WAS STRUGGLING. UNFORTUNATELY, MY HUSBAND HAD BEEN HAVING SOME PAIN IN PITCHING ELBOW, PHILS IGNORED IT. HIS ARM BROKE AS HE LET GO OF A FAST BALL IN HAWAII. HE WAS ANOTHER PIECE OF USELESS 'MEAT'.

MessageI thought I was Dick (Richie) Allen's only fan, but I guess I am wrong. I became an Allen fan in 1964, his rookie year when I was 10 years old. I also became a Phillie fan that year (in spite of their collapse). Jim Bunning pitched a perfect game that summer with Allen batting clean up as a rookie, as I recall. I met Dick Allen once during his 2nd stint with the Phillies in 1975 or 1976, when they played Pittsburgh. I lived in Buffalo NY then and went to Pittsburgh to see the Phils play. I met Dick Allen in the bar along with Tony Taylor and I have a picture of me shaking hands with Dick Allen.

Unfortunately Dick played in an era of the dead ball when pitching dominated. His power then was almost unsurpassed. He hit monstrous home runs ala Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire of more recent vintage. His lifetime avg of about 292 and only 351 career home runs combined with his bad boy image will never get him in the HOF.
