MessageYes , Richie was a super athlete. He doesn't say much about how good he was in other sports. I was speaking to his brother Hank. He told me, Now Hold Your Breath, that Richie was offered 101 Division 1 Basketball Scholarships. Yes,you read it correctly, 101 Division 1 Scholarships. Amazing.

MessageAs a lifelong die hard Sox fan, Richie is my all time favorite player. There will never be another player like him. It is a no-brainer that he belongs in the hall. smilie

MessageThe Question is,once again. Will Rich be overlooked by the Veteran's Committee ? He made the final cut from 200, down to 20 candidates. No big Deal. He makes the cut every year. The players who vote are influenced strongly by Baseball Stat Guru Bill James. Bill does not like Rich. He said that he was a bad influence in the clubhouse. His opinion on Rich came from the many books that he read. He never actually saw Rich play. James is from a small town in Kansas. He doesn't know the facts about Rich. Allen was the first African American ever to play in Little Rock, Ark. for the Phillies AAA farm club in the 60's. He was called names, his car was vandalized as was his apartment. When he arrived in Philly he was also a target of the fans. Rich never said a word about this throughout his entire career. He kept it in his gut. Bill White on the other hand speaks about the racial issues while he was playing and becomes President of the National League. It's just not fair. One man speaks out and gets rewarded while another does not and gets nothing. I have been on this site before, I know Allen personally for over 30 years.I worked as a groundskeeper in Philly for 33 years. I always propose this question and I believe it makes a lot of sense. How come a Pitcher who throws a baseball 100 MPH, and has a winning percentage just over 500 get voted in, yet a Hitter who has hit some of the longest HR's in Baseball History with numbers not? One is awarded for Power while the other is not.

MessageOver the past few years I have become pretty good friends with Richie. He is without question one of the finest and genuine people I have ever met. It is an honor and privilage to have him as afriend. He deserves the Hall of Fame. Thanks "twin". Rob

MessageDick was also an amazing football and basketball player, in short, he was one of the most talented high school athletes in the history of Pennsylvania. No one has ever said he did not belong in the hof. Dick has always refused to act in the manner that white baseball executives expected their Black players to act. Dick was and is a MAN and I am so very proud of him and his accomplishments. I know him from his HS days and before the draft in 1963, he told me he would be the rookie of the year in 1964! The hof should be ashamed of itself for excluding Dick and for not admitting Buck Leonard until after he died. And what about Andre Dawson??? Could there be a racist streak in the baseball writers who vote for the hall????

MessageRichie Allen is one of the greatest hitters ever to grace the baseball world! Misunderstood, maligned (unfairly), Richie Allen was/is a sensitive, intelligent person who happened to be an incredible presence at the plate. I saw many of the greats --- Mays, Aaron, Stargell, McCovey, etc.--- and none of them had the intimidating plate presence of Richie Allen. He was total class!
When the Dodgers traded him (I was a Dodger fan at the time), I was angry and heartbroken. Because he was not Hollywood and had a mind of his own, he didn't fit in in Los Angeles.
Barry Bonds, another of my favorites, is much like Richie --- controversial, misunderstood, and a class act.
God bless you, Richie Allen, for all that you brought to baseball. Some of us truely loved you, both as a person, and a player.

God Bless,
Jack

MessageGood job! One of my favorite players and Phillies. Saw my first Phillies game in 1964, when I was 7. Allen, Callison, Rojas, and Taylor were my favorites from the 1960s. Thanks.

MessageWhile I do think that Dick should get tremendous consideration for the Hall, there are other players more deserving. Ted Simmons has more hits than Berra or Fisk. His stats meet or exceed every catcher in the Hall. The fact that he is continually overlooked is sad.

Have a great day!!

MessageFantastic. Richie is my all time favorite player.

Great stuff. Do you sell any of his early Phils photos?

There is one photo I have been looking for--probably from the Bulletin --Richie in sort of dusk at third base. Very compeling photo.
